snow tires work
Yeah! I here you. I planted myself numerous times over the years riding mountain tires, low pressure tires, etc. The result was always a quick slide on black ice, or an over revolution on soft snow.....resulting in a ..sore hip. This year I installed snow tires with a single set of studs. Wow! Lo and behold I haven't been down yet. I toured Frenchmen's bay, watched the ice fishermen, skaters and ski doers as I confidently (in time) cycled across the frozen bay. These tires 'rock'. I am still in amazement at the grip.....at times when I would "never expect it"!!. If you like to ride in the winter elements, do yourself a favour and try a set of snowl, studded tires.

Winter is wonderful. Get out there and play in the snow!
One of the best things about winter commuting: having a thick coat and jeans on when you crash. Much better than eating pavement in shorts and a wicking t-shirt.

Sorry not me, it's a little difficult to find studded tires for a road bike...though I could for my mtb bike but I have that attached to the trainer and don't want to be bothered with connecting and disconnecting it from the trainer, changing tires to use the trainer and back to go on the road, then drip a wet bike into the basement and back onto the trainer. Plus, being over 50 it takes longer to heal from crashes! So I'll just ride the trainer and take the car to work when it's snowy and icy.

I'm enjoying the ride in the snow and ice. This has been the worst winter we've had in the 15 years that I've lived here. There was an article in the paper today about Golf Courses losing money. We still have about 2 feet on the ground, and it's simply been too cold to melt. Normally, we'll have some 60 deg F days mixed in this time of year.

Oddly enough this is the mildest winter I can remember for the 7-8 years I have lived here so I'm not getting much "use" at all out of my studded tires.
I love riding in the snow and it seems to only snow on my days off. My wife looks at me strangely when I suit up to go for a ride on my days off after a nice fresh powdering of snow.
So far this year we have had less than 10" total and we are usually well over the 2 foot mark by now, maybe even 3 feet. *sigh*

I <3 Cold commutes. I don't sweat as much, and if I do start to get hot, just open my windbreaker or loosen my helmet a bit, and voila, air conditioning.

While only being 31 I just have no desire to risk my life more than I do with my regular commute. Then again I have always been the conservative play it safe kind of guy, ask my mum. My brother on the other hand..... climbed on the roof at 3 years old.

Now if I can remember how to swim, I may start lap swimming at my pool. 15 years off of swimming and I can not remember!

I've set a limit of 20°F, mainly due to not having a balaclava.
Also, no snow riding. Again an equipment deficiency, as I can't justify investing in snow tires/beater mtb for the 4-6 days a year when I'd need it.
Everything shuts down in the snow anyways, even the bus system...

I turn soft in the teens and have been a total wuss in the single digits so far. Didn't go out this morning, -3F w/o windchill and I leave for Aspen tomorrow so can't risk an injury on the ice and snow MUP.

I refuse to even think about that question. Every time I hope we are done with it I am proved wrong.
It's going to take a while to melt all this ice. Going through the DU area is about suicidal. 20 potholes on every street with massive ice ruts. I'm picking up a bus pass today at market street station. Maybe that make this go away.

I have the choice of my bicycle with studed tires, my motorcycle or my classic 66 Ford pickup(bone stock right down to the tires). The bicycle wins hands down as my choice of fowl winter weather commuting.

Winter sucks. I've got cabin fever bad. I think it affects me worse as I get older. Still commute in 15-20 degrees when the wind isn't bad, but it's gettin' old. When's it gonna hit 30s and 40s again?

Then we would never need to use them again.

I use to be a big risk taker myself. I use to race cars and bikes, plus flew ultralights, and assorted other even higher risk stuff I can't talk about. But risk taking adventures made me concentrate to levels I never thought possible and the rush actually calmed me down...but I suffer from ADD so that may have had part in it. But as I have gotten older I have come to the realization that when I fall down and go boom, it hurts for a long time, and then I have to modify what I do till I heal; plus I have a family which I have to be around for.
Pain never bothered me till I got older, now I don't want it!!!
