My alternate commuter
An ebay impulse became my first build. It's based on a Fuji World Reynolds 853 frame. I built it up from parts on hand and purchases from craigslist, ebay, pricepoint, nashbar, and performance. Even with great deals the cost was much higher than expected - about $950 This is being defrayed by a $100 health bonus, sale of my vintage Schwinn, $200 (sniff), and about $150 for the old wheelset and a few 27" wheels on craigslist.
It's a double ring, 9 spd, all Ultegra except DuraAce barcons. Avid 4 cantilever in the back, shimano 105 up front. Cane Creek headset and brake levers. Forte stem and carbon bottle holders. SRAM chain. The carbon stryke (NIB from craigslist) can take additional barcons. I have a set of FSA FD80 wheels and a rack/pannier combo on order. I may get a rear freddy fender from a friend. The all carbon fork poses some fender issues.
I took it out on a shakedown ride this afternoon (68F woohoo). Shifting is crisp. It's a bit smaller, 58cm than my aluminum 60cm bike and I may have to get a 130mm stem.
With the panniers I'll be easier to do round trip commutes with my office clothes.
Note the reflective black tape on my old wheelset.
