Hi thought I would post some pics of a recently finished project. I picked up a beat 1981 Trek 710 for $26I had it repainted and the headtube "customized" by Dr. Deltron who posts alot on the forums here. He did an incredible job 
and the bike rides like a dream! It was built of components that I had or scored on ebay for cheap. Just wanted to post so that people see brand new isn't the only alternative!

Funky headtube. Noticeable coloring. But it still looks classy over the rest of the bike

Is this what is known as re-cycling. I've actually been toying with the idea of doing up an old beater or getting a new bike but decided to get mine resprayed in the near future instead.

I've read much about the good Dr.'s work. I suspect it doesn't come as cheap as the basic beater bike - could you share the paint job cost? I may want to get my 73 Raleigh spiffied up some day.

Anyway I sold off most of the old parts that were working and made $125. It really needed a paint, as a whole bunch was missing. Also the head badge was shot and I could never find another one on ebay so I went with the gargoyle. I also thought the gargoyle would chase away the evil, cager spirits on my commute! That is what they are supposed to do!The new paint & decals were $350 (the gargoyle was $60 of the $350). I bought a new FD & RD Deore LX ($80) as the old Suntour stuff had started to wear out. I swapped all of the other parts from my other trek commuter which I had slowly upgraded over time. Shipping both ways was $80. So $510-$125= $385
Now if you add in all of the othe stuff below, pricey!
But if you buy quality componets you can always swap them to other bikes inthe future. It helps keep costs down if you decide to change your bike. Here are the specs:

That's a great looking bike you have. Congrats. 
+1. I've been scouring thrift shops and craigslist for a decent used bike for commuting/errand running. My current bike is good enough for that, but I'm searching for something that I wouldn't mind leaving locked up outside for long periods of time.
A while back there was a beautiful maroon steel touring bike w/ matching colored fenders from the 70s on craiglist. Definantly not a beater bike. I don't remember the brand, but for $60 is it was worth a shot. Unfortunantly I was beat to it.
