Searching for THE one frame

Just placed an order for a Sturney-Archer XRK8 8 speed disc internally geared hub (very psyched about this btw)

Need to make my frame selection now and having great difficulty

I need a frame that has these qualities:
  • Horizontal dropouts (or other chain tensioning method)
  • IS disc tab
  • Rack/fender eyelets
  • < $250

Problem I'm running into is that I can find a horizontal dropout frame with disc tab but then it doesn't have rack/fender eyelets and conversely I can find a horizontal dropout frame with rack/fender eyelets but then it doesn't have a disc tab!!

Can anyone find a way out of this personal hell I've created?

isn't there some sort of issue with horizontal dropouts with a ss or internal hub and disc brakes? You could always just run a disc in front and something else in the back. I'm not sure how it would "feel" with two different types though. Sounds like something that would bug the crap out of me though.

I'm thinking the same thing about horizontal dropouts and disc brakes...but I'm not a wrench. I'm also thinking a Karate Monkey frame will fit his needs. https://www.surlybikes.com/karatemonkey.html

An eccentric bottom bracket will fix the problem of a single speed with discs. They're apparently are frames on the market now that allow you to shift the disc brakes with your wheel on horizontal dropouts, but I've only heard about them. I haven't seen them with my own eyes.

I suppose I should ask about eccentric bottom brackets. I know the principle but would having one mean that everytime I needed to retension the chain I have to take out the bottom bracket and reposition it? I don't really understand how the BB is adjusted as a tensioner.

edit: Looking into it further it appears you can't just get an eccentric into any old frame, it needs to be there to begin with. Which presents further problems in finding a frame, especially one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I hope you find a way out your personal hell dwoloz. I like my internal hub and I'm coming around to the idea of having a disc brake. But I plan to just do it just to the front.

Is there anyway you can put a hold on the order? Maybe they will let you if you change to a discless 8 speed hub. And just put the disc brake up front, more important on the front. Then you'll have more options on frame choice.

Hey, why not use one of those Surly Singleater things? You could get a verticle drop out frame and that arm would take up the chain slack. Sorry I didn't think of that earlier.

A jockey wheel tension device would definitely work BUT I intended to use this chaincase which wouldn't work with any type of external tensioner

I'm making things very difficult for myself, I realize this

Gee... that sort of thing has never happened to me. When I got my Nexus 8 I got it with the roller brake. About a week later I had it taken off. Okay... that sort of thing does happen to me... once in a while... okay, frequently. I put the roller brake remnants above the door so I remind myself everytime I leave the apartment.

If worse comes to worse, you could just not hook up the rear disc brake. I understand, you have a vision of the perfect bike in your mind and your're jazzed to get it done. It's not like any current manufactured model so you can't show what it looks like till it's done. I was there last year with my Surly. After I got all the parts together, I had still had to make some more modifications. That's a nice chain guard by the way.

Are you wanting a road or MTB frame?

Ideally, you would get something with sliding dropouts.

Soulcraft

Moots

They're mostly found on MTB frames, but seem to be getting a little more popular lately. Very few, including the mentioned Karate Monkey, have track ends and an adjustable caliper mount.

Sliding dropouts would be by far the best solution

Frame cost is the problem

Soulcraft is actually right down the street from me but their cheapest frame is in the $1500 range
