Extreme Commuter in AM New York

https://www.amny.com/news/local/am-co...,5839610.story

Here's a good story about a WOMAN who commutes 200 blocks each day in all weather on a single speed. She has no lights, helmet, face mask or hat to block the cold! Incredible.

I wish there was a way to contact her because she really needs lights and the helmet.

Watch the Vedeo on YouTube.

No gloves... that's hard core. That's one thing I won't do, gotta have my gloves.
But I don't see what the big deal is, hundreds of new yorkers bike 3-4x the distance she does and we'll never know their names, plenty of them women too.

There's this lady who delivers food to where I work, single mother, sun, rain, snow, sleet, ice, I always tip extra.

She's certainly hard core. If you watch YouTube, you'll see that she does wear gloves but nothing to cover her head at all! I'm in love! ;-)

I wish there was someone to tell her that threading though cabs on the left side like the way she did on YouTube is asking for trouble.

200 blocks is maybe a mile or 1.5 ............. 10-15 minutes on the bike? Or is my estimate off ?

One can be dressed poorly and be very uncomfortable for 15 minutes. I agree it's not a big deal.

30 minutes plus is much different. Not much room for error when getting dressed for the cold.

Apparently 20 N/S blocks are 1 mile. So she's doing 10 miles, but I'm guessing thats RT.

In NYC that'd be 15 to 30 minutes each way, depending on traffic/peds/time of day/luck.

It's 100 blocks each way, Lower East Side to 101st St. (so maybe 2/3's the length of the island). Not the longest bike commute in the city, but who cares; so many folks read that paper, this is good propaganda for all the cyclists in the city.

Dahon.Steve: You could write her a letter care of Mt. Sinai. Also thanks for pointing out the article.

Make sure to read the comments. Some people call BS on the distance or the time it takes while others are screaming about wearing a helmet or running reds. You'd think it was A&S. Most of the comments are positive though. BTW, if you take 1st Ave and can maintain upwards of 20 mph, you can make it pretty far before you have to stop for a red light. And once she's in the park, she can go however fast she wants.

For most people in this country, that IS an extreme distance to do anything that doesn't involve a car.

I used to ride to school as a kid without gloves in the fall. Even only going a mile or so, my hands would be hurting!

It reminds of this......

You say "A cyclist can ride 20 miles in one day" to a group of people.

The non cyclists will say "wow that's a long way".

The regular riders will say "that's nothing."

No offense to her, but she's not doing 20mph down 1st avenue riding upright like that.

I don't think that distance is an extreme comuter distance. Maybe the cabs make it an extreme commute.

Talking in "blocks" is rather misleading. My former commute had 7 blocks northbound for 2.6 km and 7 blocks westbound for 0,4 km. Do the maths, and you get 100 blocks in either 37 km or in 6 km.

In the first case, it would be a rather long commute – it's 37 km in stop and go traffic, not on suburban arterials – and in the second case it would be a picnic.

It's good to see positive media on bike commuting. Maybe it'll get a couple more people interested. It's inevitable someone will want to rain on her parade. That's the nature of the internet beast.

FWIW, North/South blocks on Manhattan are a uniform 20/mile. Been awhile since I lived there, but I seem to remember "blocks" being the standard measure for distances...no one ever measured in miles.

100 blocks, LES to 101st via 1st Ave cutting across the park... sounds like MT8.

Of course, the no gloves part, that's extreme. I was up there three weeks ago, I thought my hands were gonna fall off... even with gloves + wool liners. I love Atlanta's 60 degree winters.

It looks like she just rides like a normal city rider. I rode 12 miles yesterday from the suburbs into central London, and once you're in the city, passing slower traffic on either side, threading through, etc is all just normal riding practise, even for businessmen on Bromptons.

i agree it is nothing ridiculous...

so unridiculous in fact that i can't imagine wanting to do it any other way.

nice to see a positive piece on bike commuters on the news told from the perspective of a real commuter.

city residents really should get off there asses more and make use of bikes and just walking for god sake.
