Poll: Daylight Savings, Good or Evil?
It's dark later and it's light later. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
I'll start. I think it's better as I don't have to try to race out of work some days to beat the dark home.
(First attempt at a poll, so I'll probably screw it up).

I do not care for the effect on my morning commute. However, the fact is that when I pick up my kid from daycare it will be much easier not racing the sunset and safer for both of us. Thus, it is good.

It is incredibly stupid and pointless. It serves no purpose whatsoever.
It should be outlawed through international treaties.
Just for the record, I'm dead serious. I realised my post could be seen as sarcastic. It's not.

I could NOT get out of bed this morning. Finally got out of bed at like 7:40 after much prodding and stumbled to the pickup and drove to work. Uggh. So much for commuting today .
I'll be going home over my lunch hour and grabbing the bike, however. There is NO WAY I'm wasting a 72 degree afternoon.

Commuting to work in the dark is not a problem for me since I did it all winter long. With more daylight in the evening, the wife and I can now do rides together after work again.

I lived in Indiana for three years in the 90's. They NEVER changed their clocks - I loved it. I don't care if we use standard or daylight savings, but let's just pick one and stick with it! The folks in D.C. who set these policies didn't have to get my kids up and off to school this morning. I feel sorry for the teachers as there will be lots of tired and grumpy kids today.

There is no option to vote for "it's a dumb idea." I don't mind losing an hour of sleep and I don't really care when it's dark and light.
However, screwing with clocks causes all kinds of practical problems with systems, animals, or anything else that involves time. Some places don't observe it, and the move to DST occurs on different dates in different countries.
Now that the world has gotten so interconnected, I would frankly favor moving everything to UCT. Many of the people I work with are in different time zones, and things like time zones and time shifting is an unnecessary cause of confusion. Anyone who travels across during a switch to or from DST has to be extra careful (taking into account exactly where they are) in addition to the normal time zones.
Why it is important to eat lunch when the clock says 12:00 or leave when it says 5:00 is beyond me. Knowing what time it is should not be confusing. The only thing that makes it confusing is the habit of people for fiddling with the instrument they use for measuring it.

We don't have DST here in the tropics - it does cause a bit of confusion for us when dealing with customers from the USA.

Evil, evil, evil. Or, maybe as has been pointed out, just dumb, dumb, dumb. My dog's stomach doesn't go by the clock. Farm animals don't go by the clock. If it's so important to somebody to do whatever they do in daylight hours, let them get out of bed earlier and do it. Don't make everone in the entire country go through this misery.

Good for me. My ride in, in the morning (~7am) is a good 45min to an hour ahead of the worst of the commuting cagers, while I ride home (~6:30pm) in the thick of it, so I prefer the light in the evening rather than morning.

I think it makes more sense to change the start / stop time at institutions (such as places of employment or schools) than to change the definition of time.

I think changing the time is just plain stupid. If this time is so great, why don't we run it all year?

I get to ride in the dark in the morning for another few weeks, after losing that over the last month or so, so I like that.
I do wonder why we can't just stay in DST the whole time though. In the winter I never see the sun at all as it is; if we were ahead an hour I might get out of work in time to see it setting.
Most of the sysadmins I know (and me) run their computers on Greenwich time (0 hours) so we don't have to worry about it.

I never sleep well during DST. I think my brain is highly attuned to the sun. When I heard about it being longer this year, I just about cried. I wouldn't mind businesses having "winter" and "summer hours", as some do already.

I have 2 appliances that are 'smart' enough to set themselves for DST, but too dumb to be updated for this new fiat, so now they are incredibly annoying. One is not important enough to reset 4x/yr, the other, the alarm clock, is too important for the four new settings to be that big a deal.

Instead of "daylight saving time" I think it should be called "more government meddling in our life time". I don't see how it really saves that much energy. The lights are either on in the morning or in the evening. I think most people drive around more during DST. If the government is really concerned about energy conservation they could pass some laws with real teeth in them. Like tax breaks for those who really save energy not just those rich enough to buy new things and get an energy related rebate.

i love it!
"bike after work season" started earlier this year and will end later... i couldn't agree more.
but then we could keep this time through the winter and i wouldn't care either.
i like it light as late as possible and i don't mind going to work in the dark (as others have said i did that all winter anyhow).

I don't really care. I don't mind riding in the dark in the morning. What matters is I'm on my bike to and from work. If DST ever affects that then I'll eventually care.

I can do without the time changes. The hour gained in the fall doesn't make up for the hour lost in the spring. I'll vote to keep DST hours all year to extend evening riding hours w/o lights.
