Concerns about cantalever [rear] brakes?
The TREK 720 I recently acquired for my winter / beater bike has V brakes. The rear V brake cabling is obscured so much by the bike's rack that it's incredibly hard to release the brake. My thoughts are a cantalever brake would have more clearance. I have an basic set of cantalever brakes, crossover V, and cable guide.
Any suggestions or comments?

Can you add a photo?
You are not the first to report integration issues with V and racks. Its is esp difficult when the frame has a single wide tube at the upper seatstay that splits into two at the bridge.
Cantis are probably the way to go, rear brakes do little actual braking anyway.

Is is a new bike? The reason I ask is that I had a tough time unhooking my new "v" brakes when I got my bike (although not because of the rack). Now it is much easier.

Even with my beater bikes I'm always trying to improve, upgrade, clean, etc.
This bike needs a full breakdown and reassembly. I'm in the middle of getting it road worthy again just to try it out with the expected rain Thurs/Fri. I got an old cheap set of Freddy / Planet bike [not sure which] black plastic fenders at a LBS that I mounted last night. That was an effort - the semi-slick Bontrager tires are so massive [even bigger than the intended Inova studded snow tires].

Wouldn't seem to be a problem. However, keep in mind that you will have the cable travel issue to deal with.

How often are you really going to undo the noodle of the rear v-brake? I go months without removing a rear wheel. I take my front up with me (so that a theif still couldn't ride off with my bike if they get through the locks) but the rear? That sumbich stays on the bike pretty much permanently.
