How to discourage bike theft

Fed up with having his bike stolen and wheel nuts taken, the outspoken Tory MP and cycling enthusiast wants to get tough on bike thieves.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Islington Cyclists Action Group at Islington Town Hall on Wednesday night, he called for hardline 'Sharia law' to be used on bike thieves.

The whole article.

The penalty for theft

In accordance with the Qur'an and several hadith, theft is punished by imprisonment or amputation of hands or feet, depending on the number of times it was committed and depending on the item of theft.

From the article:
>>>At the meeting, he lamented the recent theft of his bike from the racks at Euston station. <<<

Why is he parking his bicycle at at train station? Why is he using bike racks?

No wonder he lost his bike. You would never park any bicycle at a train station bike rack. Parking at that location assures crooks will test out your lock. You'll need about $300.00 in locks to protect your bike at a train station bike rack.

It maybe the most convienent place to park your bike but cycles theft are the highest at train station bike racks. If you visit any train station bike rack, you'll see loads of abondoned bikes that were destroyed by robbers who removed wheels or parts.

I think that bikes should be equipped with paint grenades that make a mess of anyone who tries to steal them. No injury, just devaluing the clothing of petty thieves, and really inconveniencing them.

I don't care if my bike gets ugly paint splattered on it.

I like this idea, maybe it could work if you connect it to the drive train or the brakes.

Bike theft, of course is a perennial problem - cyclists are no more immune to these kinds of property crimes than motorists (but it is generally cheaper to replace a stolen bike than a stolen car).

Think about it. A train station is a perfect shopping spot for a bike thief. The high number of bikes available lets the thief choose the one(s) most vulnerable to theft, with a low chance of the owner coming back for it any time soon. And yes there is a lot of pedestrian traffic at a train station, but that is only in bursts when there are actual trains arriving. Once the morning rush is over, there won't be many people around.
