I've heard of but have yet to see, a pedal that is SPD on one side and a platform on the other. Can someone fill me in on the what I am to be looking or asking for. I will use this roadbike bike primarily for commuting but also for the occasional longer weekend ride.

A bit more costly, but they made sense to me are the Shimano M545 that are double-sided SPD and double-sided platforms. There's a less expensive one with a plastic platform cage rather than the metal of the M545.

I like them because no matter what shoe I'm wearing, as I start through an intersection, I don't have to worry about which side of the pedal is up.

I was going to say, "What the hell?! They've got four sides?!" But then I looked at a picture, makes sense but that's a hell of a contraption. The M324 does the trick, but I agree, I was a bit irritated by the one-side engagement - my girlfriend inherited the M324s and I got some M520s - I like my bike shoes more than my regular sneakers anyway.

Got some of the aforementioned Shimano 324s on my new bike, and my shoes showed up yesterday. Cruised around over the weekend on the platform side, used the clip-side yesterday. I've got no complaints about them so far. I've heard that the Performance Campus pedals are a slightly cheaper knockoff, but still decent quality. The Nashbar/Wellgos pictured above look like they've got a lot bigger platform than the 324s, if that's what you're looking for.

I have the Shimano M545. They're really handy if you find yourself riding through crowds of people or doing slow rides with lots of stops where clipping in and out is either a hassle or increases your risk of tumbling over. The wife and I do these sorts of things on beach trips or when we ride downtown and so on. I too use my bike for commuting and long weekend rides and the hybrid pedals -- though they might get a sideways look from roadies -- are fantastic for their versatility.

My commuter has had the Shimano M324s for about a year now. I've been really happy with them.

The wife has Performance Campus Pedals on her hybrid and likes them. On her folder I got some Wellgos, M-30 maybe? I forget. I stripped the cage off for a neater bike fold. She likes them too, and they appear to be cleat-compatible with the Campus pedals so it's all good.

I've used these for years and ride every day through winter ice and snow- great price and highly functional.

I've got the campus too... it's a bit annoying getting your feet into the clips, but you get used to it pretty quick. They were on sale and I think they were worth the money, although if I were doing it again I'd probably go with the double-double discussed above.
