Can't see the cars, for the forest...

...of traffic signals.

I'm not sure the pictures do it justice -- you really need to stand among the forest of traffic signals to really take in the absurdity of it all. I haven't counted precisely, but there are at least 25 poles, some with multiple signals.

Looks like an intersection designed by an overly ambitious just-out-of-college traffic engineer anxious to show what he can do.

I agree. Although there are often more lights than necessary at 'busy' intersections, this one has twice as many as any other in town. There are separate (and redundant, obviously) lights for each of north, south, east, west for:

Going straight across (two lanes in all directions)
Turning right (from right hand 'straight' lane -- no right-on-red here)
Turning left (from dedicated lane)
Bikes going straight
Bikes turning right (technically, right-on-red is illegal on a bike)
Pedestrians (both ways)

Looks like some traffic division had some budget to burn before the end of the year.

That's crazy! How can you possibly pay attention to all of them?
