Trying to mount a rack... not getting anywhere.

(If this is in the wrong forum... move it... but I couldn't find a relevant forum quickly. Seeing as this is what the rack will be used for... I posted here.)

I'm trying to install an Inline brand rear rack on my Schwinn World.

Got it mounted at the bottom, but I can't for the life of me get it mounted at the top. The little clip things aren't bending at the right angle for me to slip the screw through to tighten it. I've already ruined the rubber coating on one, too.

Tips?

Er... I guess Bicycle Mechanics would've been a better forum? Could someone move it there if I'm right?

A pic to see what you are dealing with would be of great help.

Here's a pic, hopefully it shows what you need.

I can't turn the clip the other way, because the rod that goes under the plate on this rack is too short, and turning it the other way causes the groove in the rod to be behind the holes in the plate, and it's impossible to affix the rod to the rack itself. Not that turning it the other way would help, but...

can you bend the ends of the rack attachers so the angle is better?

Unfortunately, I don't think it'll do any good.

I'm gonna try to return this rack, I think, and get a different one (from another LBS or something.) I don't see it working...

That looks just slightly tacky but highly functional. If you leave it like that for more than a couple of years, you might consider switching to UV-resistant black zip ties. Or, is it the white ones that are UV-resistant?

I just replace the zip ties if they begin to degrade. It's not like they cost more than a few cents...

I have black zipties, but they're weaker.

If they begin to degrade, I have access to stainless steel zipties.

You should take the rubber strips from those old P-clips, or wrap some electrical tape underneath those zip-ties. They'll be less likely to slip, and less likely to scratch up your paint.

P clips will work fine but you have to wrap them so the two ends are facing rearward then bolt the rack with both sides of the Pclips on one side.
Your P clips are the wrong way round.

Well, I couldn't face them the right way around, because the rails that came with the rack weren't drilled such that I could stick the screw that attaches the flat metal part of the rack to the rack's frame, if I put it there, that's why I had to do it the other way.

The horizontal rack stays usually have some kind of adjustment, often they slide back and forward on bolts. Of you shorten the stays by 1cm it may work.

These have quite a lot of adjustment - about a 6 inch range, I'd say.

Shortening wouldn't help, but I guess if I drilled a hole where I wanted it to REALLY be, that could work.

But, oh well, it's already in place...

mparker326: I thought zipties weren't the main topic of discussion on Fred's site, but rather 505.01? Oh, and can't forget the newbies who post saying they trashed their engine after the dealer changed their timing belt.

(Zipties are a Vortex thing, of course. )

That's great! I didn't really expect you to take my suggestion because a lot of people are sensitive about the looks of them . But my fenders have been held on with zipties (regular old white ones) for like two years now. You may want to go ahead and switch to the SS ones, just because the rack might have a decent amount of weight. And if you go with metal ones I would probably use rubber or tape under 'em to keep them from wearing through the paint. I haven't had a problem with the plastic ones going through the paint.
