Brodie Ocho - Good for a commuter?
Does anyone ride one of these? I'm going to have a look at one at a shop in California while I'm on vacation - they don't have any dealers in my neck of the woods.
It has the Shimano Alfine group, which is like the Nexus 8 Redline but with a trigger shifter and disc brakes. I'm thinking about it for my often-wet-weather Pacific Northwest commute. I have a fair amount of stop lights and hills on my ride, so I really like the idea of being able to change gears at a stop.
Any thoughts?

I think it's about 306%, if it's like the Nexus. There are some better pictures of the hub on Sheldon Brown's site: https://sheldonbrown.com/lasvegas/2006/index.html
I'm not great with gear math - does it seem like the spread on this bike would work for some moderate hills?

Try it on a couple of hills--it's a lot more range than you think. I have a 7 speed Nexus hub and go up some steep hills (although they aren't too long). There are several advantages of the hub that offset the range issue (like changing gears at a stop, no look gear change, chain cleanliness- ifyou put a guard on it). There are lots of opinions on this. Sheldon Brown's website is a great reference.

I asked Brodie, and the said the rear sprocket was an 18T. The chainring's 39T, so with 170mm crank arms that'd make the bottom gear around 31 gear-inches.
Sound ok for a moderte hill? Assuming I'm moderately fit?

Looks good on paper. Couldn't find any reviews on roadbikereview.com. Should make a great commuter for the PNW.
