Now that is versatility

I believe that smaller bikes which are capable of being fendered would benefit from smaller tires. Why more manufacturers don't do this as a matter of course is beyond me.
Surly does that with their Long Haul Trucker - for 54 cm and smaller, they use 26" tires.

Yes, I know. I was never in the market for a full-on touring bike---but when I am the LHT is the way to go, for sure. Either that or an Atlantis. :-)

I am the dorkishly stoked owner of a 60 cm Surly Cross-Check as of this coming Thurs, according to the shop.
I have never ridden one, even though I tried like hell to find one to test. I sold my Specialized Allez on CL because i hated it's twitchy handling and lack of room for commuter tires. Wrong bike for me.
I haven't been this thrilled about a bike I've never ridden. I was torn between an REI Randonee, An on sale Fuji Cross Comp (great bike, but aluminum) or the CC.
The Cross Check will be my only bike unless I get a Motobecane Messenger(flame on!) to party on.
I'm getting it fit with the bars near the seat level, all Rivendell style in the hizzy.
One day I will own a red LegoLas....one day.
By the way, the Randonee was the smoothest test drive of any bike ever.

Heh, I'm almost about to go down the same path as you. Although in my case a Cross Check seems too cyclocross oriented and I have no plans to ride off-road with it. Good luck with your new ride.

I loved my cross check!!

The only problem being that Im a clyde with a Roman legion gorilla build.

Short legs and VERY long torso thus nonE of the Cross check frames realy fit me WELL (NOR ANY OTHER HORIZONTAL TOP TUBE FRAME) I used a size 50 I realy needed a 56.

but the 56 was way too tall in the groin , and the seatpost would be fred like with no space for my bags.

I now have a full custom frame 51 in the rear and 56 in the front with a long top tube BUT!, if I had a more average type build Id still be riding my XC

Its a great frame a bit heavy But who cares! tons of clearance!!!, ALL THE BRAZONS YOU NEED

VERY NICE practical comfortable geometry , and it wont break the bank.

a very good choice.

BTW my 50 is for sale, green (headset and bb)

I've also considered a crosscheck for taking over my commuter but for now I 'll second the KM

I just got my Cross Check tonight and took it on an inaugural beer run (even tho i really don't drink beer much nowadays, I picked up a single Heineken fat can), and I am stoked! Smooth, holds the line nicely with my swapped out Michelin 28mm City tires. I went down an alley full rocks and dirt and was so happy I wasn't on my Specialized Allez. My first steel bike aint quite as fast as the Allez, but makes up for it in every other way possible. I want this bike for good. I can't wait to start replacing my car miles as I build up my bike legs after a long hiatus due to injury.
It is currently my only bike, but I suspect some others are coming my way through the ether
I must say that Rage Cycles in Scottsdale hooked me up quite nicely. The owner built it up for me himself and made a free stem/tire swap, which was super cool. They get my business from now on.

I am 100 percent bike-geeked and satisfied.
