Finding new routes
I've been commuting a few times a week lately and I'm planning on stepping it up a bit on the next few weeks. Anyway, my commute now is pretty nice, esp. in the morning but on the way home I'm getting a little worried about a section that pits me against a little bit too much traffic sometimes. Basically there is a stretch that has parked cars, four lanes of traffic (two each way) and a shopping center that people are going in and out of. This is following a bike route (not that the cars know that!), but I do have to make a left across this road, which wouldn't be bad except there isn't a turn lane which means I'm in the left lane of the road waiting for a break in the traffic and hoping I don't get hit from behind!
So I would like to work out an alternative to this section, at least for the evenings. There are a few possibilities, but I was wondering what sites everyone users to share routes with people. A few people in St. Louis use bikely.com, but not many. I have my route up there and most other routes into the city use the same path.
I'm also just torn because this part of the route is supposed to be used by bikes and I want to make drivers know that by riding there, but sometimes I just don't want to deal with traffic.
Thanks!

If your area is in high resolution, try Google Earth. I found some nice hidden alt routes where I live.

On the way home, the direct route got old. I'd seek out new routes by just riding about on new roads in order to increase my mileage.
