Very disturbing...

I was coming home today riding down a stretch of road with basically 1 lane, drafting a truck going at a pretty good clip with an ice cream truck behind me. Well, the truck made a turn and I lost my draft. At this point, I slowed down but was still going sufficiently fast enough that I thought I'd make it at least a few more blocks without slowing down traffic behind me.
Lo and behold, the ice cream truck driver saw that there was no one ahead of me and I heard him rev his motor and get closer behind me. But instead of honking, he turned his speakers on. As a result, I was chased down for 5 blocks, riding for my life, with this creepy music riding my ass the whole way.

Some of those icecream vendors are a front to sell something else.

I guess he figued if he when you got heated up from riding so hard you would become a customer.

While what you described is disturbing, I can't help but picture your avatar white coat, latex gloves on a zoomy bike being chased by a clown with red hair driving an ice cream truck and it just freaks me out. It's waaaay too Quentin Tarantino...... I'll probably have nightmares tonight.

Are you sure he didn't turn his music on because...you know...that's how people know the ice cream truck is coming?

Or am I missing something?

ice cream trucks, clowns and mimes all seem to fall into the same category of creepy.

Ice Creams truck come by my apt complex about every 2 weeks. Couple of times I was trying to take a nap too. There gotta be some kind of active noise cancellation equipment inside the cabin so only people outside the truck can hear.

....I'm picturing chuckie driving while holding a chainsaw out the window in anticipation of decapitating you, and bride of chuckie riding shotgun while tucking into a choc fudge triple scoop. The truck driver's butchered body is in the freezer, buried in the single-serve cups.

It actually was really creepy while it was happening but in hindsight, it's freaking hilarious! I think maybe he was trying to be polite and let me know he was there (so maybe i can move over) without honking at me?

My LICT (Local Ice Cream Truck) plays a carnie version of "Camptown Ladies". And it sticks in my head where I'll subsonsciously hum it for the rest of the day. But at least it isn't creepy like the Mr Softee's "There's an Axe Murderer Stalking You" theme song.

Are you talking about the guys in a van who try to sell you a speaker set? Cause they hit on me two days ago at Lowes. I was walking out to my my bike and I get the standard sales pitch. I got my bikes clothes on, I'm standing next to my bike... just where do they think am I going to put the speakers?

And it is the same standard pitch exactly. It's like they practice it in a language lab or something. I first heard it about 10 years ago when I lived in Florida. It must be some national multi level marketing thing like Amway, because I've encountered it in several different states.

Clowns and a ice cream truck? Sounds like the makings of a bad movie.

Slvoid, the guy in the ice cream truck might have been trying to save you.

Call me a curmudgeon but I hate that music. Not the music so much, but the tiny overamped speakers you can hear for eight blocks away. It used to be just a little bell. I find them know annoying.

Usually Ice Cream trucks are going pretty slow when the music is turned on; how fast were you really going?

Okay, this has nothing to do with commuting, but on Tuesday I took my daughter out kayaking, in the bay between Fire Island and Long Island, NY. I put the kayak on the remains of an old jogging stroller and towed it behind my bike, so this anecdote is not completely off-topic. Anyway, out on the water, we're paddling around in narrow channels between uninhabited islands, watching an osprey diving for fish, sandpipers running along the shore, cormorants drying their wings in the sun.... In the water we see horseshoe crabs, hermit crabs, snails, the occasional fish... our ears filled with the sounds of the wind in the rushes, and of waves splashing ... birds calling out to one another... the occasional roar of an airplane or a motorboat somewhere out of sight ... and "Turkey in the Straw." It was unbelievably loud, and just so totally out of place. I guess it was drifting downwind from an ice cream truck in the parking lot at the beach on Fire Island.... Did someone say creepy?
