Drying Clothes in Office...

The heavens opened this morning about one minute into an hour long commute. So much so that the perma-puddles on the East River MUP were over the hubs. Needless to say, I was soaked to the skin. After hanging up my dripping wet clothes in a discrete part of my office and putting my shoes in front of the fan under my desk, I was wondering how other people dry out their clothes in time for the ride home without making their workplace look like a Laundr-O-Mat.

I hang up the shorts on a clothes hanger behind a filing cabinet near a window and ac vent. Shirt hangs behind the door on a hanger. Socks laying on top of my shoes on a hidden shelf. Everything is usually dry by the end of the day.

Your fan is a good idea.

Don't allow your office to look sloppy whatever the cost. It is not good for your career, no matter how cute the boss seems to think it is.

Luckily, I am one of the few people with access to some secure rooms in my building. I keep my bike in the UPS (power not shipping) room on the first floor. I change here, keep some of my office clothes, and hang my riding clothes to dry).

I keep my spare work clothes in an electrical room near my office. I commandeered a portable coat rack that noone ever used which holds three to four weeks worth of my clothes at a time. I used to keep my bike in the data center and change in my office, but quickly tired of walking through the office in bike clothes.

Sadly, we're moving in a couple months and I'll have to start my planning all over again.

I start early around 6:00 am so I dry my clothes draped over the back of the 5 computers next to my desk. The power supply fans and case fans push out a lot of warm air. By 8:00 am when most of my co-workers come in, the clothes are usually dry and are ready to be put away.

If my commute is long I'll bring two changes of clothes, so that I have the clothes I'm going to wear at the office, and more dry clothes for the ride home. That way the wet/sweaty/whatever clothes can go in the bag and just in the laundry at home. Riding home in wet shoes is no fun, there's always wearing shoe covers or putting plastic bags between your socks and shoes, that way only the outside is wet.

I'm able to leave my stuff on a towel rack in one of the bathrooms. We have a pretty small team upstairs (6 people total) and no one else would be able to use my stuff if they swiped it since I'm a lot smaller than they are so it's pretty safe. Otherwise I don't know what I'd do since we don't have offices, just a big open work area with tables.

At my last job, two of my co-workers (who got soaked frequently) kept a small stack of newspapers in their office. They'd stuff newspaper into their shoes to absorb the moisture on the inside of the shoes.

I have a small fan which I use to blowdry my wet stuff. After nine hours of constant blowing even my soaked shoes are nice and dry for the (inevitably) wet ride home.

Clothes kind of get loosely thrown across an empty box behind me (mostly out of sight) and the fan blows at them too.

Generalizations suck.
Ignore the naysayers, if you can hang your clothes up in your cube or office do so. I have a space heater that I can hang them in front of in my cube. My boss is in Wisconsin and I sincerely doubt she is going to care. I have been promoted twice each year as of late.

I keep a small hair dryer in my desk (for me) and have made a lot of use out of the hand dryers in the bathroom

BUT, oh happy day!!!! I went to a meeting yesterday in a newly emptied room - where they used to teach some nursing courses - and lo and behold is a small fully operational washer/dryer unit!!!! Guess when they renovated - they decided to leave it there as while they don't really need it - it's there in case they do.

And I will (well hopefully not)!

But I must say I had a sweat drenched top laying on top of my CPU (under my desk) yesterday

I spread out my clothes under my desk normally - that takes care of the slight dampness that I usually have to deal with. If I get really soaked, there is actually a washer and dryer in the building (I don't really know why!) that I can use.

I put all of my stuff on the radiator right behind my cube. I use clean gear every day so it doesn't stink. I really don't care if anyone has a problem with it. I also have a small fan if it's really wet.

If I put my shoes and socks in front of a fan, the resultant wafting cloud of doom would likely kill half of my co-workers.
I suppose if you don't have a locker room, and your clothes don't reek, drying them in your office is a matter of company policy. If the company is OK with it, then go for it.

+1 to the crumpled newspapers in the shoes. I learned that trick back in high school on the cross country team.

I run some very large Xerox color printers, so I can simply drape them over the back, and let the warm air from the cooling fans dry them out. They are also out of view to everyone but the inhouse technician.... which I call, so they can be put away before hand.

I too use clean things everyday, so there is little to no smell on the stuff in the morning.

I took one of those bungy cords that is actually two joined in the middle and hooked it up under my desk so that it forms an X. I use this as a clothes line to dry the clothes I wore on the ride in, I have a change of clothes but do not want to lug soaking wet nasty smelling clothes home with me. It is tucked away so is not visible to people walking by. I also go with the newspaper in my shoes when they get soaked but I keep those under the desk as well.
The extreme air conditioning around my cubicle ensures that everything is dry as a bone by midday. (including my contact lenses).

I have one of those ancient 50+ lb computer monitors. Throw my sweaty clothes on top and they're dry in an hour. If they are dripping wet from rain, of course I have to wring them out first.

I put mine off the back of the file cabinets that face the windows. They're nice and dry by the end of the day and no one can see them.

I missed the worst part of that rain by about 20 min, here on Long Island. They are nice here, me being an intern, and I could hang my clothes and put my bike in the back parts of the shipping area (which has too much crud laying about to look nice anyway).

This morning I got rained on pretty good as well. My shorts are basically swimming trunks so they dry pretty well. I tried riding through the rain for a bit with just my shirt, but realized I was going to soaked to the bone soon so I put on a light weight rain repellant coat (I have a PVC rain coat as well, but that is reserved for monsoon rains as I'll sweat like a pig in it, but with enough rain it will be worth it). I kepts the wet cloths on for about 1.5 hours while I was doing work mostly in my office. I then moved the cloths to the server room. There is a current of warm air coming off the back of the servers so I spread the cloths out on a cart that was behind the server rack... that was the best I could do and seemed better than spreading all the bright yellow clothing all over my office. Worst case I could sneak my cloths into the dryer, but that I want to avoid unless it is a real emergency. The washer, dryer, and for that matter the showers as well, are reserved for the students. I work at a school for mentally handicaped childern and they use the facilities for teaching life skills, and therefore those facilities should not be used for other purposes.

Happy riding,
André

My cube is kind of tucked away by a window so nobody comes by or can see my work area unless they are specifically coming to see me. I usually drape my shorts over my computer case which is under my desk and my shirt gets draped over my gym bag which is also under my desk. My bike sits leaned up against the window behind me. I've had no complaints...got a promotion this year in fact.

I wear clean cycling clothes every day but even so, I'm usually stinky by the time I get home.

I have some FedEx boxes under my desk that I drape my shirt over. It works pretty well, except for the mornings when I forget to hang it up. Oops.
