When do you wake before your commute?

A co-worker who also bike commutes & I were discussing commuting when the topic of sleep came up. I like to be awake for an hour sometimes 2 before I leave. His commute is about 2 miles more than my 8 mile commute. He told me that he pretty much wakes up & hops on the bike in about 15 minutes. I couldn't imagine that, I always pack the night before so organization isn't a problem. I just like to have lots of time before leaving, so how about you?

I pretty much wake up just early enough to shove something down for breakfast, take care of the usual things, and then jump on my bike and sprint the entire 6 or so miles to work (I usually am pretty worn down by the time I get in, but I wind down as the day goes by). I'd really like to ride at a comfortable & leisurely pace, but...I can't really bring myself to wake up early enough.

Wake up, wash face, brush teeth, put in contacts, get dressed, throw socks and underwear in bag.
Make quick smoothie or milk, OJ, banana.
On bike.
20 min, tops.

I'm usually up for a little over an hour before I leave. I brush and walk my dog every morning and this alone takes around 20-25 minutes. (Lhasa Apso kept long with a top knot; she's cute) I need at least 25-30 minutes to ready myself and enjoy some coffee, along with one of my wife's highly nutritious breakfast smoothies.

WOW! I thought I'm alone at that.
Today I woke up late, so I drove to work. I know, I know, shame on me.

I usually wake up about 8 miles into my 14 mile commute to work

I'm usually on the road shortly after I get out of bed, I think. I can't remember. Gah!

I have to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I go to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day then ride to work. I think about twenty hours to answer your question.

Take a wizz, brush my teeth and dress then right on the bike. Years of riding through the winter has taught me that if I don't do it quickly, my mind will start to think of reasons I should really be driving today.

I loathe having to race around in the morning. I'm up at 4, coffee, smokes, bathroom, hair, internet, breakfast, double check for commute. Then out the door NLT 5:20 for a 30 minute ride to be at work by 6.

I like to have at least an hour; more is better. I like to spend it eating breakfast in front of my laptop, reading BF and the like.

I'm up at 4:30, breakfast, read the paper, check the net, shower - supposed to be out the door for 5:30 so I can do the around the bay 22 km long commute - But, I usually lollygag around, end up leaving around 6:00 and doing the 11.5 km short commute - I get to work for 7:00 or so...(ride 11.5 km, then drive the 35km rest of the way)

I'm up around 4AM and do a couple of hours of uninterrupted work from my computer at home. Then a leisurely breakfast, cleanup and off to the chaos at work around 8:30.

When I work nights, I roll over around 9am-ish and maybe get up by 10am. Cook breakfast, smoke, have 2 cups of coffee, watch a little TV while on the computer, shower, clean around the house, leave around 1:45pm and get to work around 2:30pm.

When I work days, I force myself out of bed at 5am, immediately eat a banana and granola bar and wash it down with a Fruit2o energy(water & caffeine!), shower and I'm on the bike by 5:30am to get to work around 6:15am.

I hate working days!

I am employed in pest control for a national franchise. Normally I get up at 5am and enjoy two cups of freshly ground coffee--YUMMM! I do some reading, surf the web and pick up late breaking news, then I get ready for work and head out. Normally I need to be at the office by 7am and my first job is at 8am. I'm new to bike commuting (just finished my first week), but the ride is only a little over 3 miles. Ironically, it takes me about the same amount of time to get there by bike as it did by car. Of course, I take a different route on my bike to take advantage of bike lanes. I have NEVER been one of those folks who can jump out of bed and be on the road 15 minutes later, at least, not without suffering psychological damage!

i like to get as much sleep time as possible, so i keep my morning preparations to the bare minimum. i'm fortunate that my commute takes about ten minutes, depending how many red lights i get. nowadays i usually start at 8, so i have my tea, and then some breakfast once my stomach wakes up after the ride/sprint. mind you, in the winter i have to allow for time to put on extra layers/gear. so yeah, up 7:20-:30; put bike inside 8:00-:05...

It's very hard for me to wake up. I'm uncoordinated and stumbling for a good 15-20 minutes after I wake up. I fall back asleep while leaning against the wall in the shower on a regular basis. If I just headed out the door and hopped on my bike, I'd be a dead man.

I keep setting my alarm for 6:30 so I can have time to take a detour and a longer ride or workout at the gym, but I inevitably hit snooze a hundred times, roll out at 7:40, have just enough time to wizz, walk the dogs, slam some instant breakfast, pack my workclothes and run out the door. Luckily my wife packs my lunch.

If I'm out the door by 8:10 I can usually make work (5 mile commute one way) in time for a shower and can log in at 9. I cut it short everytime, and it never ceases to amaze me at how lazy I am.

Luckily I will never do the car thing because mine is a beat up POS so a bike is what I got!
