I just ordered this:
Terramar Silk-Weight Base Layer T-Shirt
I'll see how it stacks up to my UA heat gear shirt which i've used for about a year on almost every ride.
I usually put my UA heat gear short sleeve shirt under my cold gear long sleeve for decent results when i was commuting in cooler weather earlier this year.

In the winter, i find UnderArmour Coldgear to be complete crap.
I arrive at work after an hours commute in the winter and its half soaked. If i wear dryfit, or even a underarmour heatgear as a base layer and a proper thermal layer, i arrive dry. To me, Underarmour is proof that marketing wins vs function and effectivness.

+1 Gah, one morning, I got stuck in traffic. At 40F, the sweat just sat on the shirt and I froze it off using cold gear as a base layer...remained chilled for the rest of the day.

I've found the Cold Gear to live up to expectations, maybe it's my layering and acclimation that make the difference. I usually run a UA/Clone shirt (the thin one, what are we calling them now?) under the Cold Gear garment. If it's below 20F, I'll have a wind shell on over that.

I have about a dozen Athletic Works T-Shirts form Walmart. They work just fine, hold no odors & wash as easily as any "high end" cycling specific t-shirt.

So yes, layering it with a real base layer would work well. Your also not wearign a shell over it unless its colder than 20f, so sweat isnt accumalting on it. Having it exposed direct to the air its able to evaporate the sweat, as a previous poster also had success with.

With Ross, Marshalls, TJMaxx and other stores, compression shirts like Nike & Under Armor are easy to be had at a fraction f the price you would pay elsewhere. And Layer8, I'll give them a thumb's up for their compression garment. Anything polyester, cold water and hand wash. Drip dry too. I use laundry detergent and they are clean & fresh smelling with no change in performance when they go back out in the field.

Wow kickstarting a 6 year old thread about polyester undershirts is pretty ballsy.
