Bike for Commuting?

I live in the North East and just started commuting this past spring. Very short ride, 5 miles one way, so I use it as a sprint to compliment my training. I've been using my road bike (Specialized Epic) slightly modified with Aeros and bar end shifters, for racing in sprint and Olympic Tirathlons. I don't want to use it during the winter months since it is my only 'race' bike although I do want to continue commuting.

Anybody have any suggestions for what to look for in a used, inexpensive, durable road bike?

I know there as many opinions as there are people, but I'd like to hear your ideas based on your experiences....

Thanks in advance!

(Oh yeah, I've been lurking for a while... This is my first post here!)
