someone died on my route today too (Seattle)

story

The official details are still foggy, but it sounds horrible. In my own experience it's a pretty sketchy intersection (a bike lane and a lot of drivers taking a "free" right is not a good combo). I'm not even sure if that's what happened here. One account has the truck veering into the bike lane.

Anyway... all of that is really beside the point right now. I can only imagine what the families of the parties involved are going through right now.

Please be careful out there, everyone.

I too have no idea what happened in this story but I suspect these two were filtering past the dumptruck and he turned right.

That happens everyday in this country.

Why bikers do that I have NO idea but virtually everyone does.

Here in Columbia we have successfully gotten the city to stop all bike lanes before major intersections with the hope that the bikers will merge with vehicle traffic and go through the intersection like that.

We would never design auto traffic like that. We would never put a right hand turn lane on the left side of a straight thru lane but we do that with bike lanes all the time.

How stupid.

These two threads about bicyclists dying has gotten me thinking that there's got to be at least twice the number of us that have been paralyzed or seriously disabled. That's the kind of stuff you don't read about. This sux.

Around here.....

everyone runs stop lights, stop signs, filter to the right and ride at night without lights.

Its a wonder 5 people a day are not killed here. It must not be THAT dangerous. Imagine a website where people discussed the 123 americans killed in their cars that day.

There are 300,000,000 americans. Some of us are going to get run over by dump trucks.
