Recommendations for a good commuter MTB saddle under $40?
I need to replace my stock late-80's Schwinn crotch-crusher seat. My sit bones hurt. What sub-$40 saddles do you people recommend for semi-upright riding?

You might try finding a used Brooks for that amount. If you can spend a bit more you can get a Brooks B-17 from WallBike in Louisiana.
They have a 6 month, no questions asked, return policy on their new saddles and occasionally have used ones for a bit less.
Here is their site.....

The Performance Forte Contour saddle ($30) is pretty nice and cushy. I've been using one on a few bikes for 3 years. It looks like they changed the design, but it's probably just superficial. A friend also has the Forte Classic and he seems to like it too.
With either, you can return them if they don't agree with your butt.
Not sure you have a Performance near you, but you should always print out the web page with price when you buy in store. Sometimes the store price is higher and they will match the web price if you have a printout. Then again, sometimes it's lower too, in which case you 86 the printout.

Check out the WTB saddles. There are many models to choose from and fit your budget.

Picked up a WTB Speed V from Performance. Not sure how I feel about it. Might be too narrow for me. If it doesn't get better over the next couple days I'll probably go back and swap it for a Forte Contour.
The Serfas saddles look like they'd fit the bill but I'd much rather be able to try before I buy, or at least have the option of selling for almost as much as I paid (which would be an option with a Brooks).

I had a Brooks B17 on my commuter bike. Due to some unfortunate circumstances I no longer have it. a few weeks ago I purchased a Sele Royal Ergogel (ATB/Trekking) from AEbike for $35 and it has been just as comfortable as my Brooks was once it was broken in, and the Ergogel saddle did not require a break in period. They make one that is slightly wider called the Ergogel (Touring/City) saddle that might also be worth looking at. My commuter is semiupright, being 10+ year old mountain bike with butterfly bars, and the saddle I chose works quite well for *me* in that situation.

The local Walmart and Academy stores have big ol' cushy seats that work fine for me- avoid the gel stuff, just go for big and cushy. Around $20.

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
Try out a Specialized saddle, too -- the Milano ($30) felt nice to me, and they have a few others in that price range.

AE bike has a Selle Royal for about $17. Looks cushy. I haven't gotten it, but I will. I'm going to do a multi order so I can save on shipping.

Check out the LBS for trade ins. Many time upgrades start before a new bike leaves the shop. My LBS also caters to the local Law enforcement entities. Many of the "cop bikes"get the seat changed out. Many times it is a decent WTB laser or Specialized seat, for more of a sofa type seat.
Typically you can gets these for cheaper.

I had the Softail from Performance on my old Gary Fisher converted commuter until it (the bike) was stolen a couple weeks ago. I just picked up another for the replacement bike - it was on sale for $20 or something like that. It worked fine for me, but the real test may come this weekend: I'm building another Gary Fisher for my wife and if the tush isn't comfy, she isn't riding!
