Bicyclist pedals off Maine State Pier

"Police say the man who rode his bike off the end of the Maine State Pier last night was admiring the tugboats in the harbor instead of paying attention to the end of the road.
Roger Cyr of Arundel splashed into the water around 6:30 and had to be rescued by the Portland Fire Department. He told police he was just admiring the tugboats as he pedaled down the pier and didn't see the end coming until it was too late.
He was quickly pulled from the water and treated by paramedics for a shoulder injury. The bike, though, wasn't recovered. It's more than likely still at the bottom of Casco Bay."
Too bad they didn't say what kind of bike it was. If it was a nice one, I could have went for a swim at lunchtime

This guy must love his tugboats.
At least I had the common sense to pull over this morning to admire a DC-8F on approach to SJC. Otherwise, I would have either a) been run over or b) run into something.
Edit: Now that I think about it, I did once see a mountain biking buddy biff because he was trying to watch another buddy pull some stunt behind him . He turned his head about 120 deg. from his direction of motion and then he lost it. Hilarious!

I once saw a guy ride off the edge of the MUP and bail into the grass because he was paying attention to some jogger's backside instead of where he was going.

Note to self: Buy ultralight carbon bike with big frame tubes. Can use as personal flotation device in case of riding off pier.

Okay I remember the last time I crashed where it was my fault... no, actually it was my wife.We were riding along the bike path, and she pointed out a sushi restaurant on the other side of the road. I of course looked, didn't see where she was pointing, so kept on looking a bit longer than normal.
Next thing I know I'm on the ground. Ran into a guy wire holding up the telephone pole. Who cares if it was enclosed in a bright yellow covering
Actually I meant to get some photos of that "bike path" I don't ride on it unless my wife is with me. The guy wire comes down to a pole sticking out from the telephone pole, and then straight down to the ground, and ends up between the pedestrian and bike paths. Further down, it has fire hydrants and poles in it. They basically added it by paving over the section between the kerb and the sidewalk.
