Saw more commuters today

And I was glad to see them too. I was up really early this morning selling peanuts for Kiwanis today (it's the big annual fund raiser), and I was on the same corner I've been at for the last 5 years. I don't remember seeing any bicyclists commuting before, and I saw 2 who looked like they were commuting by choice, 2 who made me wonder if they had lost their drivers license, and 1 lady who seemed pretty happy to be out on her bicycle and who knows if she was going to work or not. I saw more motorcycles too, all in all a nice contrast to most of the cages.

I have only ridden with two commuters on my 25-mile route in almost three years of doing it. In one area, though, I see quite a few people riding their BMX or Wal-Mart bikes on the sidewalk or on the grass a couple of blocks, but they look at ME like I'm an alien when they see me riding on the street WITH traffic. I think GA motorists have been able to keep most of the chickens in the coop pretty well.

The number of commuters here has actually been declining recently, as the weather has started to turn and the rains return. All the yuppies with their hopped up road bikes and full-out spandex are finally getting off the road and leaving it to those of us who do this kind of thing year-round. A little sad, really, since I know that they've switched back to cars for the most part, but nice since they're not flying around creating dangerous situations for everyone.

Really? What, exactly, do you THINK they're doing in their cars??? I find that the bad cyclists equate to equally bad drivers. And I'm sure the opposite is true.
