Almost rear ended a car this morning...
I was coming up to an area I hate riding through but it's really the best way for me to go to work otherwise I'm riding through an industrial area with a lot of trucks and diesel exhaust. Anyway, it is pretty residential with a high school off on a side street but idiot parents always park in the bike lane to let their kids off for school (which is illegal-and cops sometimes ticket them for this but not enough obviously).
Anyway, I'm coming up on the parked cars in the bike lane so I signal that I'm going to move over in front of a car, traffic was heavy and moving slowly. I glance at the opening to make sure the driver isn't going to plow into me as I move across and when I looked back ahead the car in front of me was stopped and I was heading right for it. I grab two fists of brake and swerve to avoid the left rear side of the car and barely made it. Didn't even lock a wheel fortunately. Could have been a lot worse. |
Sounds like a stretch of road where you should have already been in the 'vehicular traffic lane' because because traffic was 'heavy and moving slowly' and there were cars parked and merging in/out of bike lane.
My morning commute used to take me thru a similar sounding residental areas by a school and the bike lane either both very slow kids riding both directions in it and parents quick stopped for illegal drop offs. There were also several right turns leading into the school parking lot which were heavily used. It was a take the lane area for a good 1/2mi Al |
