Relocating to Montgomery, AL

I'll be relocating to Montgomery, AL next summer and would like to maintain my car-lite status if I can work out a reasonable commute route.

Anyone out there with suggestions for getting from the East side of town to Maxwell AFB?
My priorities for picking a place to live are
- Close to kids school (East side of town)
- Bicycle routes in/out

I haven't been there in several years, but I remember lots of time on the interstate/highways that I can't/wouldn't want to ride on. I'd like to keep it 15-20 miles, but I'll do more if it's safer.

Thanks,
Crazy
