commuting gear bargains

FYI, I stopped at REI yesterday and they had Cygolite NitoRover lights with the NiMH batteries on sale for only $43. That's quite a bargain as they normally retail for $70-80. I've had one of these lights with the NiCad battery for a number of years, and it works great and holds a charge well.

On the other hand, my new Fenix flashlight arrived in the mail yesterday, and I cannot believe how small, light and bright it is. It weighs just a fraction of my Cygolite, yet puts out more light. I haven't had a chance to use it yet riding my bike, but it definitely appears to be an excellent option for a commuter light. I am mounting on my handlebar with a Two-Fish Lockblock.

REI also had Bell Metropolis helmets on sale for $54, compared to $70 normally. Although I wasn't shopping for a helmet, I bought one because the Metro has a strap on the rear where you can attach a blinkie taillight, which I couldn't do with my Bell Ghisallo. I've been trying to find another way to add a third taillight to my commuter, and this is the perfect option.

The switches on the Cygolite aren't very good... I've had mine for a year, and a couple months ago one of the switches failed. I had to take it apart and use a small screw driver to bend the metal contacts to get it to work.

I've read a lot of other people have had similar problems. Other than that, it's been a great light for me.

You can add a Frog light to just about any helmet.
