Bikes: Raleigh Chiltern 3 speed, Pioneer Venture GT 27 speed tourer, Carrera Subway 8. Sadly I don't like the Pioneer, which though I've had it for over a year, has only been ridden three times, and is still in brand new condition, with the blue grease on

Commuter's Hell

Had to be rescued on my commute to work this evening, both front and rear tyres punctured, usual culprit of glass strewn all over the cycle path. Why ,because of mindless morons?!

Where can I get airless tyres?

This is happening too regularly, ruining my commute, and I can't afford problems at work.I've heard all about puncture resistant tyres etc.,but the simple truth here is these booby traps are unbeatable,

Help

two words:
Mr. Tuffy Tire Liners

Since myself and a commuting friend put them in last fall, we have had a combined 1 flat, due to a fish hook kinda piece of metal.

Mr. Tuffy's. Specialized Armadillos - ride like dooky, but impervious to things as tough as staples.

I know the feeling. I got it from a staple today. Pissed me off when I realized I flatted because some pinhead thought it was their God-given right to litter.

X 3 on the tuffy liners. I also back that up with slime tubes. I carry a spare tube and patches but I haven't needed them for several months

I ride an mtb with 1.5 to 2.0 dia tires and I use a tubeless setup that works very good. I've had punctures that sprayed sealant all over my chain stays and it still sealed up and I was able to get to work and back home. I like the higher volume tires since they seem to handle a puncture and still have enough air to be ridable. Try this link for more info. I use homemade sealant, but you can't go wrong with Stans and his info.

Were the tires damaged or just two blown tubes?

I ride on glass strewn streets all the time with nary a problem on my Vittoria 700x35 commuter tires. I was skeptical of their puncture resistance at first but daily riding on broken glass has proven their worth to me.

Sounds like you hit some really bad glass. I suspect no sealant or liner would've helped that. Sorry for that frustration. I've been there. Tore open my rear tire once, sucked.

Just ride on the road, the cars will clean up the road for you.

I ride tuffys, Armadillos, and slime tubes. Only one puncture since going to that setup and that was from a screw about an inch long that managed to get itself into the tread of the tire. Even with that in there, though, the leak was slow enough that I was able to make it the rest of the way home (about 5 miles).

If the glass is bad enough to totally rip up the tires, though, even this setup wouldn't have worked. I'm with maddyfish. Take the lane and put in a call to the local public works department.

Tuffy's help but are not perfect. I had my first puncture flat with my Tuffy's the other day, it was a sharp little piece of metal like a staple. I don't run great tires because I am running out the tires on the bike, but when I replace them (soon) it will be either Schwalbe Marathons or Armadillos along with Tuffys. I have no use for slime though.

Staples and screws will go through just about anything. They're pretty much the only thing that can flatten my Continental 4-Seasons. However, a tough tire or liner should be able to protect against most glass.

Make sure you get the tool w/t tires as they are almost impossible to mount w/o it. There was a recent thread w/much info and varying perspectives here on the 'Commuting' site. If you do decide on them make sure your psi rating for the tires ordered is AT LEAST 20 psi above where you run your pneumatics. It's only an extra 5.00 and well worth it, believe me. Expect to lose 1-3mph consistantly and for the ride to feel a little different at first. You'll get used to it pretty quick. And don't believe the 'slippery in wet weather' mantra. I've been riding a set of 20mm 105 psi on my road/commuter bike and have hit 35+ doing S curves in the rain w/no probs at all. Got them on the 23d Oct and have put 200+ miles on them already. It's my 2nd set. The others are 35mm hybrids 110psi w/3000 miles on them. The rear is practically a slick, but I'm going to use them on a single-speed I'm building.
