On the other side of the price spectrum are Ortlieb panniers. They're not cheap, but get rave reviews. Available from Wallingford, REI, and others.

The Axiom bags look like a good value, but I've neither used one yet or seen them in person.

Arkel?

In the meantime, if you already have a rear rack, you can strap a backpack to it with bungees, or a bungee net (bungee nets are about $5, for motorcycling.) A backpack can be had for under $20, and you can wear it off the bike (or on, if you're in a hurry.)

I dont know if it is a good or bad because I have been commuting only since 2 days myself, but what I have done is attached a milk crate to my rack. Then I just put my laptop and clothes in a laptop backpack, and throw the backpack in the milk crate ... I kindaa find it surprising as to why I dont see that many people doing it ... Because I can use the milk crate for grocery, and haul lot of other big items as well ...

And by the way, https://www.ebags.com/columbia_sports...?modelid=96288 this is the backpack that I got from ebags. And I am hoping that for rain, i should just be able to put the backpack in a big garbage bag and should be good .. ?

Milk crates can be pretty awesome. Though with a laptop I'd be a little worried about the possible banging-around. The few times I carried a laptop when on a bike, I carried it on me, so my body could cushion the vibrations. But then I know lots of people who use panniers to carry their laptops and say it works just fine.

Thanks for the replys and the pannier sites. I will go over these tomorrow night. As a side note, I had my first go round with a head wind, talk about a buzz kill, that was something.

Milk crates have to be the best bike invention ever made! Oh wait, they arent made for bikes, but still they rock! I love backpacks for everything except on the bike. You can just toss the backpack into the crate and ride. I just bought an older Panasonic "road bike" and said I wasnt going to milk crate is up like 2 of my other bikes, so I just got a Axiom grocery pannier and my backpack fits in it nicely. Looks like it will hold tons of grocerys also!

BTW, try checking ebay (where I got my grocery pannier from), you might find a set for half price that someone bought and commuted for a week or so and gave up and is selling the bags.
