Do you know of any politicians who bike to work?

Just curious... I imagine if there were, it's possible change could occur more quickly.

I don't think he bikes to work, but DC Mayor Adrian Fenty is a triathlete and has been in competition even while in office.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/dcwir...ing_mayor.html
http://www.americanprogress.org/pres..._on_fenty.html

I'm actually more proud of this guy than Mayor Williams, our previous mayor whose main claim to infamy is the courting of the Expos to become the new Washington Nationals and building the white elephant of a new ballpark instead of rehabbing RFK.

Yes, several, although the only name that comes to mind right now is a city councillor, Clive Doucet . I don't know if he bikes in the winter, though.

Up here Federal NDP leader Jack Layton cycles to Parliament Hill. I am not sure whether he does it on a continual basis or did it as a publicity thing.

Doh! How could I forget Layton?!? I think he's a "most of the time" cyclist, from what he said in interviews.

Boris Johnson, Conservative candidate for Mayor of London bikes to work (he is currently an M.P.) Since his bike was nicked he has added the introduction of Sharia Law for bike theft to his list of policies!

In Portland, we've got a few local politicians who bike commute.
  • City Commissioner Sam Adams - although I get the impression he's not organized enough to do it all the time and make it to meetings and such away from City Hall.
  • City Commissioner Randy Leonard - good weather only, and he drives through the first part of his commute where motorists are scary.
  • The City Attorney is a regular bike commuter, although I don't know his name of the top of my head.
  • Mayor Tom Potter pulls out his recumbent for publicity purposes.
  • Former Mayor Bud Clark did ride his bike to work regularly when in office.
  • Metro (regional government) Councillor Rex Burkholder. I don't think he's the only one on the Metro Council, but I'm not sure who the other is.
  • My House representative, Earl Blumenauer. He was off his bike for a while from a broken leg, though.
  • Rep. Peter DeFazio, who represents the part of Oregon that includes Eugene.
  • I think Senator Ron Wyden has been known to occasionally bike commute.
  • I believe Blumenauer and DeFazio drag the rest of the Oregon Congressional delegation out on bikes periodically.

Wasn't Earl Blumenauer quoted as having said on the floor of the House, "Let's have a moment of silence for all those Americans stuck in traffic on their way to the gym to ride a stationary bicycle?"

So, why is this guy not running for President?

His wife bikes too.

Says Jack Layton hasn't owned a car for years. Maybe we should get him to sign up for the Living Car Free forum.

I think Toronto City Councillors Glenn De Baeremaeker and Adrian Heaps both cycle to and from City Hall every day. And both of them are out in Scarborough, some 15-25kms away.

He did say that. If he were President, I doubt they'd let him ride as much. It's easier for the Secret Service to secure trails than roads, after all.

Last I knew Rep. Earl Blemenauer was chair of the bicycle caucus in the House. I recall reading he did ride to Congress on a bike.

He doesn't have a car in DC, or a least he didn't before he broke his leg.

NYC Dept. of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff are both bike commuters, as I believe are a number of DOT employees (Sadik-Khan "stole" several of her staff from bike advocacy group Transportation Alternatives). US Senator Chuck Schumer is a recreational rider.

he is a good congress member . Glad he did not pull a Sonny Bono. Had it'd been on a bike, it's create concern as to the safety of cycling.

In Latvia a few MPs cycle to work in the summertime. Strangely enough one of the bigwigs in the Green Party here was complaining about people cycling near the Parliament.
