carbon fork + front rack + commuting?
is this a recipe for disaster, or only if i'm stupid about over-loading the front rack? i don't actually have the fork yet, so i'm not sure what i'm going to choose. the rack is a cetma 5 rail.

Use an Old Man Mountain Cold Springs front rack and you'll have no issues at all. I have two and they are great racks.....
The Sherpa front rack also looks nice and it is less expensive.
BTW - OMM will provide free mounting hardware for any unusual applications. Just call them and tell them what your fork is and they'll sort you out. Very helpful guys!....

What's the point of a carbon fork when the rack will weigh more than the fork? Unless, of course, you need the carbon fork to match your carbon Aerospoke wheels or something.

But if he has a carbon fork it will offset the weight of the rack. It's a zero sum game in the world of cycling

Carbon rides nice.
Are you looking for a carbon fork with lowrider eyelets? I know the exist on some complete bikes but I haven't seen them sold seperately.
As long as it's of the overbuilt cycloros/mountain/touring variety you should be fine. But no clamps.

I must have awakened on the retro-grouch side of the bed this morning or something.

If one was so foolish as to attach a front rack to both the handlebar and the front axle the ride quality would be the least of one's worries.
EDIT: Nevermind

Sure. But then again having 10-15 lbs of stuff on the front is going to change the dampening factor as it is.

Depends on the rack (specifically attachment points) and the fork. A small rack on a CX fork wouldn't worry me much. Actually might look into that myself. CX racing here lasts ~2 months so you might as well get good use the other 10. Some small racks attach to the canti bosses for that very purpose.
