Skull cap / skullcap recommendations?
I've been riding with the same REI / Novara skull cap for over a year. I wear it anytime it's below 65 or so.
Anyway, after all this time, I misplaced it. I ran in REI over the weekend and bought another one. It wasn't until I got home that I realized it's entirely different from the original one. The material and cut are different, and the hat slowly rides up, leaving my ears exposed. It's horrible and I can't wear it.
Anyway, I need to place an order(s) for a replacement asap. Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation. I have a rather large head so if you know of something that runs small that info would be useful.
Something with full ear-coverage is a must.

Try your local dollar store. You can usually find cheap, warm caps for a buck. I have a couple and they are thin enough to fit a helmet over and warm enough to keep my ears out of the wind.

Thanks. My head size is somewhat limiting though. Partially because of the limited amount of extra room in my helmet, this style of hat is the only thing I've found that really works.

A skull cap aficionado, I've got many.
The PI one is decent for slightly cool temps.
Smartwool one holds a fair bit of moisture, but continues to keep you warm. Much the same with all wool.
I have a Craft WS one that is great and comfortable over a very wide range.
A no-name fleece that's too bulky, but quite warm.
The best one is the Craft. Hands down.

I've used the Pearl Izumi pictured for at least a couple of years and it is great for anything warmer than godawful cold. For a little bit cold or cool I wear a Heatsweats Skullcap. Actually, those work for hot, too.

I got a Mountain Hardwear. Wool, full coverage over the ears without ear flaps. I have a big head so it should fit most noggins.

You left one cap out that should be on your list -- the HeadSweats winter cap. I've got two of them that I have used for years, and they are great. They wick sweat from your head great, cover your ears, and keep your head warm. That said, although I haven't tried the Craft, I've used their other products, and I'm sure it is an excellent cap. I have a Craft balacava, which is made of the same material as their ProZero base layer gear, and it covers your face and neck but is thin enough to wear under my HeadSweat cap. I've used my HeadSweats cap in temps down into the 20s, and it's always kept me warm. I got the balacava for more face and neck coverage, not because the HeadSweats wasn't warm enough.

If it had white and black panels it would look like one of those "snoopy helmets" the Apollo astronauts wore.

Coverage is adequate. The cut however, isn't perfect. They really should have those ear flaps, but still it works well.

Upon further thought, for me a skull cap above 30F is too warm for the most part.
So, mostly I wear a REI windstopper headband instead of the skull cap in temps above 30, It's my favorite because it's very thin, fits under the helmet really well, protects my ears and forehead form wind, It keeps the ears warm but I don't over heat.
I suggest giving that a try .

Smartwool Cuffed Beanie
Picked one up this year after using a Cannondale brand synthetic beanie last year. The wool is superior. Doesn't stink, and stays warm when wet (ie sweaty or when you get caught in the rain). The cuffed part is nice because it lets you roll it down and back over your ears for a kind of "double layer" of insulation on the ear. It's not too thick and fits under my helmet easily.
This is probably the neatest cold weather accessory I've bought this season.

Are those ear flaps usable with the cap worn backwards, under a helmet?
