On my RANS V2:
Max. downhill = 54 mph on a downhill with a 55 mph speed limit. I slowed down when I glanced down at the skinny 20" front tire and have not done it again.
Max. flat = 35 mph with no wind on my morning commute about 5 years ago.
I do 35-40 mph on a downhill (50 mph speed limit) every Saturday on my way to my RC flying field with the RANS, and also with my Specialized Hardrock towing a small 35 lb. trailer. Stable as a rock. The best I can do on a flat road with the Hardrock is about 28 mph. The V2 with fairing is much faster and more stable.

29 MPH at the end of the first block leaving home. I live on a 12% grade street. 15 to 16 cruising on smooth, flat pavement.

Where in West Seattle? I used to live over there, high speed was just over 50mph I believe on Genesee (down below the golf course). I was trying then, I'm faster now up hills and on the flats now, but probably wouldn't take the chance again to go that fast down hill.

About 45 MPH in London, 47 MPH on a long hill in the countryside and about 32 MPH on the flat. I don't plan on breaking 45 again though any time soon.
I've got a nice commute, long flat 2 lane road with a 30 MPH limit for about 3 miles. It makes for a great opportunity to take the lane and ride with the flow of the traffic, I find that so much more satisfying than pure speed these days.

best so far was 56mph. down a very steep long hill. Tucked in & spun & coasted. It was fun but scary - the road is going by FAST at that speed.

Once in Austin, TX on my MTB years ago I went cruising down a hill at full tilt and the comp showed 51mph. We came around a small curve as saw a major light at the bottom (for those of you familiar w/ Austin, it was Mesa drive heading South towards 2222). We literally got the brakes smoking trying to stop. That's as fast as I would ever want to go on a bike!
Nowadays, I regularly ride with traffic for ~.75 miles at 30, and there are a couple of spots on the commute that with good conditions I hold 30-34mph for a bit. Otherwise I generally don't go faster than 20mph becuase I'm slow

I've held myself back at 42 when I probably oculd have gotten close to 50...I was new to road biking and didn't trust those skinny tires, coming off the 2.35s on my MTB. Been meaning to hit those hills again when there's no rain and I know what's beyond the curve ahead of me.
When I bike to church, there's about a 1 mile section of road with a 35mph limit where you always catch a red light. I like to try to position myself behind an SUV or minivan and pace them as long as I can. Oftentimes it's almost the whole distance. I only assume I'm going about 30-35 because my touring bike doens't always have a computer mounted.
I thought I would try to break 50 when I did the 3 State 3 Mountain Challenge last year, but the roads were waaaay too curvy for that. Spending several minutes pushing 40 without having to use my legs was a new experience, though.

48 mph on a hybrid tandem with my wife. I live in North Texas and there's not that much in the way of real hills. It was our first tandem ride, and I'd read too many stories about cooking the tires off the rims by braking too long on downhills, so we rolled it out.
When she asked how fast we had just gone, I told her, "About 36". She slapped my arm hard and told me to NEVER go that fast with her again.

Fastest speed on the commuter bike (~30 lbs of aluminum, lights, and bombproof wheels/tires): 35mph on a fairly level road while drafting off a bus and a bit of a tailwind.

The fastest I ever saw was 62mph while descending in CO. I was crazy, what can I say
On my commute on my mtb, I've never experienced anything over 27 on a downhill or 21 on the flats

Flat land? 38 MPH on my road bike, for about 2 seconds.
Downhill? 45 MPH on my road bike, pushing as hard as I could, but it wasn't too steep. There was a hill I coasted up to 42 MPH down, and I could have easily broken 50 MPH had I been pushing.
The scariest was pushing hard, going 37 MPH on a mile-long stretch of 8% downhill road on my mountain bike, with a stop light at the bottom. The mountain bike just isn't made for that kind of speed, and if the light would have changed at the most inopportune time, I'd have been going too fast to shut my bike down before cross traffic started. Fortunately, it stayed green.

On my commute I regularly hit 27-31mph going under a railway bridge, depends how energetic I feel and if I bother to change up a gear to crank it out a bit more.
Fastest ever recorded speed I've got on my roadie: 37.7mph. MTB: 36.6mph. Both of which were down big hills. I've hit 37 a couple times on my roadie, once coming down the Niagara Escarpment, once on the Gardiner/DVP interchange ramp on the Becel Ride for Heart. The MTB run was going down Haldon Ave into the Taylor Creek.
I remember riding down the Scarborough Bluffs hill (big downhill into a lovely lakeside park area) and having a weird "float" feeling in the front, scared the crap out of me enough to slow way down
On any normal city-based riding, my max. is usually 24/25mph without downhills and I try not to push too much (I ride my geared bike in one gear, if I changed gear more often I'd probably go quicker, but I like the SS training). I ride between 17 and 21mph comfortably (95% of the time, wind + fatigue changes that )

I think if I had the right tires I would feel better about super high speeds on my MTB--larger contact patches and disc brakes.
When I was coming down Suck Creek Mtn my brakes faded almost completely and I very nearly plowed into someone--plus there was a hairpin curve just ahead of me that I only barely made. Luckily that was the bottom of the mountain, but I would much, much rather have quality brakes made for stopping than road bike brakes made for not being lightweight and unobtrusive.

My dad use to live pretty much on top of a mountain. The downhill is about 7 miles long and steep as hell. His brother was pulled over on his bike because he was doing 60 on a ten speed. Cop didn't think he'd be able to stop if he needed to.

29 mph going downhill. Fastest I've pedaled was about 21 or 22 mph, normally can't keep up with the wheels over about 17 mph. (Not commuting, just riding around).

I've gone up to 33 mph on my fairly flat commute on a all out sprint once. Not something I want to do again though.
On a rec ride the fastest I've gone is 43 mph on a very nice curvy downhill. I probably could have gone faster but I was scared.

holy cow...some of ya'll scare me. on my work commute, my fastest is going down the ridge, and i only hit about 25 mph. i have to merge into traffic at the bottom of the hill but i'm not sure i'd be confident in my handling skills/brakes going any faster than that. i'd rather get there in one piece.

Max speed I've clocked is 42 mph at the bottom of a mile long 3% grade on my commute. I had to see how fast I could push my new bike last summer. Generally I'll top out at 35 there, though. A lot of seasoned cyclist I know have mentioned around 50 mph as their all time best.
