Weird day of riding...

So today I rode 10 miles and damn I was just out of gas. Yesterday I felt untouchable and only rode about 8 miles because I had to get to work. Anywho today I got to work, somehow and man I just had no gas left. Four and a half hours later I ride home and the ride was very easy. Has this ever happened to you and can you explain what happened?

Not much telling. Could be getting woken up, warmed up, going downhill or downwind.

Could be fluctuating blood sugar, too- if it's too dramatic, check with a doctor.

Nutrition has a huge impact on your perceived energy level, I have had this happen before and could trace it back to not fueling my body properly before a ride or run. I can be both food and rest related.

Sounds nutrition related. I've have some sluggish morning rides after a wild night before. A good breakfast and some rest usually helps...

I would definately say fuel for the engine could be the problem. I rode to my ex's job to pick up the car the other day and thought I was going to die, but I ate while out and had no problem getting home in a hurry. It's all downhill to her job and obviously all uphill home. But I know if I'm not fueled properly, I end up feeling like I'm pedalling through tar.

Lets not forget the other major part, sleep.

Wind? It can be subtle. I can't see it being nutrition if you didn't do annthing out of the ususal for that short of a ride.

Well I had kashi cereal for breakfast about an hour and a half before my ride. No wind nothing different.

Maybe one time you rode at an aerobic level and the other at an anaerobic level. Aerobic is where your muscles will use oxygen to create energy. Anaerobic uses other means for muscle fuel. I find that some rides where I'm pushed into an anaerobic state (head wind, hill, etc), the next day I will be drained. At an anaerobic level, I don't think a Kashi ceral is going to cut it for food.

what about stored energy. how long does it take for that to be used if you're bonked?

this (going real slow even though i am trying) happens to me alot if i don't have a 5-10min warm up ride before going a bit faster.

also if i haven't slept well and i jump on the bike to get somewhere in the morning, it can turn out to be one long slow boring ride.

Nutrition...wind...big night the night before...sleep...mood...caffeine...

They all might play a role, but there are times when, inexplicably, it's just not there.

Sometimes, inexplicably, I'm Lance Armstrong.

I have times where the ride in is easy and great, and the next morning it sucks.

I have the same thing on the ride home. Some days are good, others not.

Don't know completely what it is. Sometimes I will hammer to or from work (or both), then the ride(s) after are slower due to being tired.

I agree with what everyone else said however, except that I have not reached the "Lance level" yet .

I've never had a bad ride home from work (in the early evening). I often have a lot of trouble getting to work in the morning, and it has nothing to do with not wanting to get to the destination.

In my case, I don't always eat breakfast before leaving, and sometimes eating breakfast seems to mean that I move more slowly. I don't quite get that.
