This has already been mentioned, and with a Youtube video.
And as for the theft proofness of it, how could you not be seen climbing up a plastic tree, unclipping a bike, throwing it down, climbing down it, and riding away in the middle of the day.

Of course you will be seen. Better question is if anyone will stop you, and I am betting no.

This has already been mentioned in the Commuting forum? When? also, just because a thief may be seen climbing up a plastic tree, unclipping a bike, throwing it down, climbing down it, and riding away in the middle of the day doesn't mean a thief's not going to climb up a plastic tree, unclip your bike, throw it down, climb down it, and ride away in the middle of the day with your bike I'm guessing that maybe Maximan1 doesn't live in a major U.S. city where this type stuff happen's every day. I've heard of people having their bike's stolen while chained up on a third floor fire escape! so the possability of having a bike stolen from a Biketree shouldn't surprise anyone one bit.

I do wonder though... with the need to lift/twist the bike to remove it, it looks to me like the bike may not be able to be removed when parked.

Or actually, what would happen is that people would remove the QR front wheel and end up with a bike and no front wheel.

They would then go to the nearest traditional bike rack and find someone who didn't chain their front wheel.

Seriously, I think it looks pretty theft resistant. But as with anything else, it takes people seeing a theft to step in as the final step of the security process. It could in theory, depending on algorithm, be possible to defeat the system electronically.

And if it has a good algorithm, then it could be very secure... then what happens if you lose your smart card? I know where my bike is. It is safe, and I can see it, I just can't get it.

Loose your card and you'll be paying a thief to get your bike down!

That looks like the case to me. As you say, I think the best they'd be able to do is to release the bike without the front wheel. So a simple cable around the frame and front wheel should do it. Either that or replace the QR with a bolt-up front axle and carry a wrench.
