29er rack

Hey guys, I had posted this on Dirtrag forums and was directed here and told some of you commute with KM's and could help so here it is. I am having trouble finding a rear rack that fits my KM with discs and Big apples. Right now I have an old avineir rack that I made some leg extensions for but it is just too shifty. Thanks.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't any wide 700c rack fit? You may need p-clips if your frame doesn't have eye-lets and you may need to use slightly longer screws to fit around the disc brakes.

700c road/hybrid = 622 etrto = 29" mtb

Planet Bike has a disc specific rack for 700c wheels. That'll work.

I think the problem is that 29" big apples are going to have a lot larger diameter than a 700c tire. He's likely running into issues with the tire hitting the upper rack.

That is correct. Tire rub is my problem. The discs can easily be overcome with a trip to the hardware store and some steel tubing.

I see lots of racks with adjustable legs on the web but am having a hard time finding the specs for how long they will extend.

I ride the same bike as you: Karate Monkey with discs and Big Apples. My rear rack is made by Axiom. Pretty sure it's this one.

It works, but it's a PITA to adjust and install. Holds a lot, but I have had the front leg extensions pop out on me when they weren't totally cranked down.

I just took a look at my Topeak Explorer and it does not have the clearance for Big Apples. Sucks, cause I wanted to try some someday, and I didn't even think about the clearance issue. I looked at the PB Eco Rack Disc as well, it doesn't have the clearance, either.

Just like you said, it seems there are too many points of failure for larger loads. I'm sure that with some proper pre-load checking you would be fine though. This unit seems to be able to handle anything.

It looks like a tourture device... but if it works it works. Thanks for the help and feedback.
