Meh, truth is that cycling magazines are mostly about new products or racing, and as a commuter, I am not really interested in either all that much. I prefer to come here.

Those of you with an interest in commuting and urban cycling etc might consider a subscription to Transportation Alternatives or the London Cycling Campaign magazines (they're probably online too). Although they won't be directly relevant to the place you live (unless you live there by chance) but they are filled with "best practice" ideas for reform etc.

I actually believe (which isn't the same as know) that bike-based aid projects are amongst the most likely to succeed in some way because they're concrete, achievable, and sustainable (to a degree). I had a friend that had been hired to go out and write an impact assessment of a bike donation project that had been running for a couple of years. Unfortunately, I don't speak to them any more so I don't know what their conclusion was...

Hi,
I am subscribed to Spanish:

Sólo Bici.
BIke.
EL mundo de la Mountain Bike.
Cicilismo.

and American:

MBA
Bicycling, the best for me.

Road, mtb, anything I can read, I read it. Bikes, books, big stores leaflets, electoral propaganda, elevators safety rules, even owner manuals.......

I wouldn't use "Bicycling" for toilet paper - you might catch some disease from the "Style Man". Bicycle Quarterly is good.

I can't imagine why I'd want to buy a magazine to read about commuting. I wouldn't buy a magazine to read about driving a car, or about walking around, either. The only new innovations I'm interested in are the latest headlights I suppose, and nothing in print can hope to be more up to date than the web.

Let's face it, bikeforums is better than anything you're likely to see in print (especially with their advertisers looking over their shoulders at reviews, etc).

I just wanted to chime in with another vote for Momentum (https://momentumplanet.ca/). This is a magazine published in Canada that comes out once every two months. Earlier this year they began entering the US market and you can get a very reasonable subscription to them. They cover a lot of aspects of bicycle commuting as well as general bicycle culture. It's very well written and has a wide variety of topics, from legal issues to case studies of folks and communities working to increase the use of bicycles as transportation.

I'd like to put in a vote for the Rivendell Reader. It's not really a commuting magazine, but it's more about utilitarian cycling and related topics... and if bike commuting isn't utilitarian, I don't know what is.

There are no ads except for Rivendell's, and the editing is much improved over earlier issues... altho you may still encounter the occasional misspelled word (not unlike these forums).

Biggest problem with the reader is it doesn't get published with any regularity anymore. They used to have 4 issues a year. Last year I think they had 2. But you can still buy past issues on CD pretty cheap.

I gave up on <i>Bicycling</i> a year or so ago. I was really sick of the ads and the general spirit of promulgating the usage of bicycles as toys. Their token commuting issue doesn't count.

I devour most mountain bike related mags out there. Bike, MBA, DirtRag, Bicycling/Mountain Bike, Singletrack is excellent as well.

Practical Pedal and Adventure Cycling are the only two that get delivered to my house. I'll pick up a copy of Dirt Rag if it looks like it might be good. It is a shadow of its former (early to mid 90s) self.

I love this magazine. It even has recipes.

I'm also fond of Practical Pedal and Velo Vision.

Velo News has excellent Tour de France coverage. Bicycling magazine appears to contain mostly bran-muffin recipes and equipment-oriented articles that inspire bicycle replacement and upgrade. This is a world-class rag. The Rivendell Reader is a great pub for bicyclers (might be going to PDF only soon).

This is the correct answer. I'm more roadie than mountainie (?), but this mag has a sort of laidback attitude that is open to any type of cycling, really. In a refreshing change, a number of the writers are female and they test the hell out the bikes. They actually had a review of a bike specifically set up for commuting, which they tested by, duh, commuting on it for weeks on end. A Surly, I think.
No, I don't work for them, I was just happy to find an enjoyable magazine.

Surely someone has mentioned Velovision. As best I can tell, pretty much one of the most sucessfull bike magazines dealing with utility and every day cycling.

They're not terrified of the occasional $3 word either.
I'm on my second subscription to Bicycle Quarterly and it's the only bike mag I bother with these days. Interesting, intelligent articles and reviews - that are not written for the advertising $$$.

Pretty sure there aren't any Fred specific bike mags, but I could be wrong. I'm certain that if there were they'd be called zines anyhow ;P

I dunno depending on what you like, road or mountain there are quite a few choices. Most of them seem as good as the next. Magazines are kinda like TV to me though. I don't really read them for anything other than quick entertainment. Or when I'm on the can =)

My choice would be A to B magazine https://www.atob.org.uk/ or Velovision www.velovision.com both come available in paper copy or online PDF format. I do the PDF format because it is cheaper living in the USA
