Freaking out!

Ok this is ridiculous. Awhile back I posted a thread about having pain in both my abdominal region as well as my testes. And while I have mananged to situated myself correctly on my seat and have begun to feel more comfortable the pain(s) still re-occur.

Long story short. I notice blood in my urine today at work, and I went crazy. Seriously. Am I the only one this has happened too? Impossible. I dont know what to do, or if this is normal....I wouldnt hope so.

Anyway I am a commuter and have been for a little over a month now. Is this a sign from above telling me I need to stop riding? WTF!?!?!?

Please I would really like some feed back. Before I jump to conclusion and run to see my doctor.

Thanks, and sorry if this doesnt belong here. But I was hoping for a 'Health and Wellness' forum but couldnt find anything. And to those of you who responded before to my previous post about the above mention symptoms...Thanks.

Please go see a physician and take everything you hear from someone on the internet with a grain of salt.

1. Schedule your appointment with a doctor
2. Go onto webmd and put in your symptoms, don't freak out by the worst results. Feel better when you see some that aren't so bad, and still go to the doctor.
3. Go to the doctor.

I don't know how sitting on the blood vessels down there would cause urine in the blood. But I'm not a doctor and not very good at guessing medicine either!

Edit:
4. If it's not horribly embarrassing please tell us what was wrong. I suppose you've already told us about urine in your blood, so you can't be too shy.

Is this common at all? I dont have any friends that bike, at all. So I have no real means to discuss this with anyone to find out if this typical of someone new to the sport.

If I was in pain and bleeding out any orifice the last thing that would come to mind is posting about it on bikeforums....maybe that's just me?

After you see your doctor, get a good saddle. Specialized makes awesome Gel saddles that have a cut-out in the center to relieve pressure from sensitive areas.

I have them on a few of my bikes, so far so good !!!

Also, make sure to keep an eye on you seat height. If it is too high, you will have to stretch your legs down quite far which places more stress on the soft bits... Lower your seat post height just in case =)

After you see your doctor, get a proper bike fit done at your local bike shop (LBS.) Look for a shop that will give you the attention you want and you will feel comfortable with.

I recently had one done and I've noticed a great improvement in my comfort on the bike. I'm also getting faster as my muscles adapt to the more efficient position.

Thanks for posting .

Hematuria sounds perfectly normal to me! Once, when I was riding my bike, I had cerebral spinal fluid pour out of my nose and ears. I thought I should go to the doctor, but I read on the Bike Forums that it sometimes happens, and that I should just adjust my helmet, or better yet, not wear one at all. Whew, crisis averted.

Then one time, I noticed that I developed diplolia. I later read here that this could be caused by wearing yellow safety glasses at night. So, I changed to clear and the problem has mostly subsided. Wow, another close call, with health-care.
Then just the other day, I noticed that I was having a bout of surpa-ventricular-tachycardia. Turns out, that it was really just pheochromocytoma causing a slight thyroid storm. God, I love the Bike Forums!

Nah, you don't want to do anything crazy like seeking medical attention .

Marathon runners sometimes will have blood in their urine due to the combined nugie effects of each step. But I haven't heard of it with bike riding. So another "GO SEE A DOCTOR" response here. I'd skip the WebMD thing as sometimes "common symptoms" are only experienced by 50% of the people with that condition. That's a coin toss. I recommend that you make a time line of your health for the last year and describe in a paragraph or two what's wrong as best and clearly as you can. Type it up with a word processor and give it to the doctor. Sometimes "doctor's office anxiety" will cause people to forget to inform the doctor of a few things. I wish you the best of luck with this and hope it's nothing. But the sooner you get this dealt with the easier it's going to be. A stitch in time saves nine.

Obviously, it's time to think about getting a recumbent. After getting checked out by a healthcare provider,of course.

Urethral trauma resulting in Hematuria (blood in the urine) is possible from bicycling and there are any number documented medical cases. I have no idea as to how common. I'm sure there are lots of other things that can cause it as well, many of which are more serious than bruising your johnson. GO SEE A DOCTOR. Rule out the bad stuff, correct the problem if it is your seat or position, and continue on. Lots of us ride many miles without having such a problem, so if the cause is related to your bicycling it should be pretty easy to cure.

A visit to the doctor TODAY is a fantastic idea. Blood in the urine warrants them squeezing you in TODAY. Get yourself checked out.

After that is over, I would also consider, at the very least, a new saddle and a different saddle position. I have to tilt mine slightly down, to avoid discomfort, and make sure that the saddle fits my sit-bones. You want all of your weight on your hip/sit-bones, and almost NONE in the middle.

I would not ride for a few days, to a week or so too, unless the doctor gave me the okay. Doctor, doctor, doctor.

I guess it's been said already...

Common? Goodness, I know a lot of people who ride a lot, and I've never heard of this. It's also the first time I've heard of this on this forum, which is more cyclists than I actually know.

I'm certain I'm like many here who have never experienced anything like this.

Oh, and in my opinion gel saddles are not the answer. But I'm a Brooks rider.

Ah well, I'll say it too. Call your doctor. Now.

Since my post last evening I have spoken with several nurses, have been examined by my doctor, completed a urinalysis, have had x-rays taken and am scheduled for a ultrasound on monday. Although I am confident that this pain, and all of these re-occuring symptoms-aching and bleeding, can be attributed to my cycling this past month they still want to move forward and proceed with testing to rule out anything else. Which I am more than willing to do, obviously. In the mean time, I am going to head back to my local bike shop and request/demand that they re-fit me to my bike and make sure that the current saddle position is correct for me...and from there I will lower the seat some more and perhaps change the angle of the saddle.

Thanks to all who responded, and I will let you know how everything works out.

Did your doctor tell you it was okay to ride before they rule stuff out? Ive been riding bikes for 36 years, and have never even heard of anyone having extreme discomfort from a bike seat, never mind bleeding.

OKay.. For starters tell you wife/girlfriend to stop pulling on your balls at night.. j/k All kidding aside it could be something or nothing. Bladder infection comes to mind; however, don't delay going to the doctor.

Glad to hear you're getting thorough medical attention Earlsquirl.

I had a similar deal, turned out I was getting urinary tract infections. In retrospect, the biking exacerbated an old problem (constricted urethra due to a birth defect), most likely. It took a year and repeated antibiotic prescriptions till I finally saw a urologist, who had me implement a simple and highly effective, ahem, mechanical intervention. (Canada's medical system is wonderful, but I do find it has a lot of pill-happy MDs in it.)

It sounds like the medicos are being pretty on the ball about this, but if you have any doubts remaining, I'd recommend asking to see a specialist.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at above. Granted, I haven't been riding for 36 years, but I've never heard of anything like this. I've seen fit issues cause sore muscles, or strain knees, or a host of similar complaints...but I've never heard of a fit issue cause anything this dramatic.

That's pretty extreme. If the OPs doctor just chalks it off to something like "oh, this just happened because you were riding a bike" I'd ask to see another doctor.
