Tip when being chased if conditions allow: Dogs when chasing close at an angle and pick a point to meet you. If you feel you can't outrun the dog when you see a dog approaching from an angle slow down and zig zag to confuse and screw up the dog's approach. I've tried this and it worked for me. YMMV

ASP Baton
Hey, I like nice well behaved people. Ditto dogs. I'll scratch their ears / bellies for hours.
I'm tired of being attacked while out riding and our local TN laws now support our rights to ride unprovolked. We are still receiving bills from my wife's dog wreck costing over $12,000 a few months ago. I've tried a lot of defenses over 25 years. My objective is to prevent future attacks, not to reward or encorage their actions. Sprinting or tossing treats DOES NOT DO THIS!
A local animal control officer suggestied i get a ASP type expandable baton for protection against the attackers. I bought a 21" one for $25. Used it for the first time yesterday on one of a couple large dogs (lab & german shepherd mixes) attacking our evening ride. I've been attacked at this site twice before.
Dog was coming in at 5 oclock. I grabbed baton and struck back in less than one second, striking somewhere in the head area. Attack aborted. Owners fault, period, for not controlling dog.
IF this attack had resulted in a "serious personal injury" they could have been criminally charged with a felony.
