On the road? I wouldn't use an mp3 player. On a trainer? Nine Inch Nails, Black Flag, AC/DC, White Stripes, Flogging Molly, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath.

I have listened to various tracks. Podrunner has a set of good training paces and they are mixed well. I have just finished "Brother's Grimm" book of Faerie Tales that are within the public domain..... Will probably go to EC next.

If you do a search in the Commuting, Road Cycling, and General Cycling forums you'll find out that most cyclists do not listen to music while riding. You need to be alert to the sounds around you, like that Prius that you can't hear and is about to run you down. Others just enjoy the sounds of the wind, birds, rustling leaves, and barking dogs.

I have ridden with headphones for quite a while. No issues. In fact, I was hit by a car and not wearing headphones. How did my hearing help me then? It did not.
Anyhow, I plan on only listening to my ipod on the MUP while I get my comfort level back.

But seriously, I'd never do it. I've yet to hear an argument against "the music / headphones are there because you want a distraction", and distractions are bad on the bike. Plus, I've never been one for needing to have my life set to music, despite being a trained musician.

That being said, on quiet or empty roads I'll have a tune going through my head or I'll be singing along to it. Jack Johnson's "Breakdown" has a sweet irony as a bike riding song.

On Sunday I was listening to c89.5 (pop/dance station in Seattle) before rolling out for a century. Usually this is OK. Unfortunately I ended up with a teener club mix of "I Can't Wait to See You Again" by Mylie Cyrus (sp?) stuck in my head for 103 miles.

Glad to see that there is so much thread-highjacking advice about keeping all senses at tip-tip shape.

Personally, I'd never ride without having downed six or eight double espressos so as to heighten my reaction time and hone my senses. The espresso along with my blue leotard and red boots, red underwear worn on the outside and my red cape render me invincible.

Music is, of course, somewhat a generational thing. . . the beat is what counts for me.

The OP said nothing about using headphones.

For me, the music would depend on my purpose. For commuting, I'd go with Jack Johnson, Bob Marley, maybe a bit of George Strait or Willie Nelson. If I wanted speed, go with something like SLOT (russian rock band), Green Day, etc. Really just something more upbeat for the speedy tempo.

Use a bit of ingenuity if you want music while riding. A set of small speakers cleverly attached to handlebars or a bag are very possible if you don't mind being creative once in a while.

I usually just sing when I'm biking. I don't usually know lyrics to most songs, so either I sing the same verse over and over or make up my own lyrics.

Lately I've been singing Offspring's Self Esteem, Jon Lajoie's High as ****, Mike O'Connel's What's it Gonna Be, Jay Z's 99 Problems, Eric Clapton's Cocaine, Cranberries' Zombie, Talking Head's Once in a Lifetime, The Killers' Uncle Johnny.

I get some kind of weird looks belting out songs off-key with the wrong lyrics while trackstanding in traffic.

This is pretty much in my playlist as well. But my commute is 10 minutes so there's no point setting up my iPod really. If I do listen to music on a longer trip, it's usually something a little more mellow so i can keep the volume down or wear one earphone. In which case I have a hodge podge of "alt"-music spanning the last two decades. Current favourites are stuff from The Weakerthans, Bloc Party, Decemberists, Feist, Tom Waites, Coheed and Cambria, Flight of the Conchords (lol!) as well as various retro 80's.

Blaring that out with a SkullCandy speaker backpack. Neil for anytime and U2's song is good for at night riding. Add a Dinotte or crazy DIY 3 x high power red LED brightness and you're good to go.
