Combat commuting

I only cycle to work one day a week, but I usually experience at least one NDE (near death experience) on every trip. I battle red light runners at intersections, dodge garbage and trash along the shoulder/bike lanes, and try and out run the ubiquitous pitbull/homeless pan handlers on just about all of my commutes. It's 24 miles from home to downtown Houston and all 24 make for interesting stories once I show up at work.

I used to have that every day in NYC for the past couple of years then I wised up, found a new route that allowed me to get a better work out and was safer.

If I were you, I'd find a new route. It's not worth it.

Agreed. I've also noted even from last season, drivers have become more distracted and careless. My first week back this year, people who actually made eye contact with me still almost hit me. Awareness, my friend, stay aware.

wow, i consider myself lucky. My whole commute is pretty much on a bike path along the foreshore all the way to uni. The only traffic I have to deal with are morning runners and other commuters, who all seem to know what to do when a bike comes behind/in front of them.

I commute in Boston. I've had exactly one close call, as I'd define "close call". If I was having that sort of experience daily, I'd change something for sure.

I have ridden a motorcycle for nearly 40 years. I survive by assuming that I am invisible, and that anyone who gets near me has blown my cover and is now actively trying to kill me. I carried that over to my bike riding and it helps. But I completely agree with other posters who suggest finding a different route. I fine tuned my 10 mile one-way commute over several months, sometimes just finding different streets through the same neighborhoods. It wasn't the most direct, but it was a more interesting and safer route.
