NPR story on bike commuting

It's good to see some national stories on bike to work week day - happens every year but these two seemed particularly good (for a change). Don't Salmon, Don't Shoal: Learning the Lingo of Safe Cycling, Across The U.S., Bicycle Commuting Picks Up Speed

I'll have to wait until I'm home to read this so I can put on some jazz and whisper it while sipping on some red wine.

"Good times..."

I love NPR, but yeah, it does sound a bit like SNL's Delicious Dish skit most days.

Love the articles! I hope bike-commuting continues to grow in popularity; sadly, about the only thing that's going to make that happen besides education/advocacy is the near-bankruptcy of the majority of car owners.

The link is to an NPR article. Have you ever listened to NPR? It's all soft talking and jazz.

Meanwhile, I bet Alec Baldwin has done his share of Idaho stops. In fact, I bet just about every cyclist has, except maybe the cyclist who once yelled at me for doing an Idaho stop at a light: "You're making cyclists look like they don't obey traffic laws!"

NPR is doing pretend bike commuters a great service for Bike to Work Day. Now they can try out some of the new lingo while hanging out at the pitstops along the way, and no one will notice they are newbies (aside from the fact that their bikes are clean and they are riding at 5 mph).

"Hey, did you see that salmon back there, Sue?" "Yes, I would have used a right hook to catch him! Nice legs on that one!"

That depends entirely on the NPR station. There is a wide variety. The one I listen to is pretty much constant news. There are many different tracks of programming that NPR stations follow. The only common thread is that they are 100% better than commercial stations.

I think when he said, "It's all soft talking and jazz," he was referring to the news and their musical segues.

That and their weekend programming on the news ones. Delicious Dish was a pitch perfect send up of Splendid Table (or do I have the real and SNL titles reversed).

Splendid Table is one of the only weekend shows I can't listen to. A Prairie Home Companion is the other.

But Car Talk, Wait Wait, This American Life, Radiolab, TED Radio Hour...I sometimes listen all Saturday.

I just detest Prairie Home Companion, but I get some really helpful hints from Splendid Table...

But Car Talk, Wait Wait, This American Life, Radiolab, TED Radio Hour...I sometimes listen all Saturday.
I like all of these, but I just absolutely love Car Talk!

Frick and Frack are definitely not soft talking and jazz.

Idaho stop sounds like a diner that has a speciality with potatoes. I'm in support of that.

O'Mahony art deco railcar style diner with a big googie potato sign that lights up with a blue neon outline "spud's idaho stop".

Throw in a few canopied bike racks outside & electric chargers for EV's and carside service in good weather.

Now all i need is a small biz loan & line of credit.......

Negative. What drove be to bike riding was traffic congestion and a scarcity of parking spots. Never had any interest in cycling before that. Education/advocacy is irrelevant. Hell, if half the habitual cagers went bankrupt, it would unclog the roads and make driving vastly more practical and appealing.

Not a fan of Garrison Keillor, but I do occasionally enjoy a little Splendid Table with Lynne Rosetta Caspar or whatever her name is. I just realize that it can be a bit over the top at times. Though I haven't listened to as much NPR lately as our daughter has gotten a bit older. Now it's pretty much all audiobooks or kids songs all the time in my car (with a few oldies/classic rock songs slipped into the kids play list so she gets exposed to good music too).

Car Talk, WWDTM, and What Do You Know are my favorites on the weekends. During the week I listen to Morning Edition in the A.M. and All Things Considered + Marketplace in the evenings.
@himespau, a friend of mine nearly went crazy after a full year of Yo Gabba Gabba on Netflix and singalong tapes...and then they had their second kid. My hat's off to you!

How about Sound Opinions?

We saw Whadyaknow years ago, and ended up having a beer at the next table as the crew in the beergarden by the studio after the taping. They were even funnier off the air.
