A powerful reminder on my way home from work.

I was biking home today, my first return commute, and I took an alternate route through an area of the NCSU campus. It's a side street called Nazareth st.

I saw a bike chained to a pole.

It was pretty far from any house or building that was around so I wondered why it was there. As I approached I saw that it was completely painted white and there was a sign that said:

"A cyclist died here."

Riding your bike is a constant focus on details.
Pay attention my friends and watch out for yourself!

Good idea. Around here they hang mangled car parts on the bushes along the sides of the roads to show all the places where people unexpectedly went "off-roading". Mangled bikes displayed on the sides of the road would be a pretty good reminder, as well.

At the front gate of all the bases I served at, the would frequently put the mangled remains whatever vehicle some dumb (usually DRUNK) Jarhead was driving when he/she died...... Kept me from being too stupid....

That's a ghost bike. They are definitely a very vivid memorial for those unfortunate lives lost in bicycle-car collisions. It's rather sad to be so familiar with them, but it seems they are all too common here in the Portland area.
