Detroit's 2008 Bike-to-Work group rides & workshop

This year both Detroit Synergy and American Cycle and Fitness are hosting bike to work events in conjunction with national bike to work week. REI is hosting a free bike commuting workshop in Troy on Wednesday.

I've just posted an updated ride and workshop schedule at http://www.m-bike.org/blog/tags/bike-to-work

Note that a couple rides were canceled and a couple others were moved back a day due to the weather forecast.

If you register and participate in the American Cycle and Fitness rides, you'll have a chance to win a Trek commuter bike. You can register at

I'm amazed at the amount of people (who used to think I was nuts) asking about my commute everyday. I always expected to be seen as being on the fringe of society here in Metro Detroit. Now, I'm looked to for advice on purchasing and riding a bike. It gives a pessimist some hope!

Is Detroit is a good city to bike commute in because it's pretty flat and has wide roads, or is it a bad city to commute in because it's so car-centric and has wide roads? Neither? Both? Just curious.

It depends on the commute. I'm lucky to have half of my commute on a trail and a major divided highway with a HUGE shoulder and rolling hills. A lot of roads here resemble the moon, especially right after the winter. Side streets are a must for the commuter, the only problem is the suburbs are a labyrinth to get through, so planning and mapmyride.com help out a lot.
