My 15 seconds of fame

Bike Week (was Bike to Work Week) is officially off to a great start here in Kansas City. A lot of non-commuting bicycle events are being put on this year, so we just titled it Bike Week, but it falls during the L.A.B. Bike To Work Week schedule.

Among those events, I rallied a few volunteers to lead bicycle convoys to and from various destinations around town. My particular convoy had 6 people RSVP. 5 showed up. Not bad for a 14 mile one-way starting at 5:45 AM.

A local news crew showed up, originally to get some footage. They ended up interviewing me. I'm not photogenic nor am I used to being on camera. I'm much more comfortable on the other side of the lens. Here's the online article from the TV spot, including the second (and thankfully shorter) interview with me. They actually interviewed me twice. Recorded, and live.

Anyhow, we had 4 of those 5 join me for the return trip, and some are coming back out this morning. I figure what better way to celebrate during what other cities are calling Bike To Work Week, than trying to get some more people in a convoy, learning the route and getting more comfortable and self-sufficient as riders?

I'm glad that many people were willing to get up early and give it a shot. Most people I work with hear what time I wake up and my milage and say the usual "I could never do that". Keep it up!!

...and on the opposite end of the spectrum, all I hear is..."you're lucky you live so close to work." Of course the ppl in my office that live just 2-3 miles away all drive.
