I got my little sister to ride to school.
She lives just a half block of my normal route so starting this week I have been picking her up in the morning and riding with her on the two miles to her school. She is a sophomore in high school so I hope that starting young will help her keep with it. Its a little bit out of my way when we actually get to her school but I am happy that she is doing it.

Nice! I'm trying to convince my GF to start. She ran marathons in her past, but never did cycling. She is most concerned about safety since she lives in, and would have to ride 10 miles in the 'hood. I found this for her on CL:

I said she could probably pick it up for $50-60, and if she uses for one week, it pays for itself in fuel savings and she can toss it if she doesn't like it.
She doesn't seem convinced that side roads are feasible or safe.

I normally ride a main thoroughfare but with my sister I take the backstreets. So far she has impressed me with her boldness. Good luck with your gf.
