It's not really the pedal that squeaks, it's the shoe rubbing against the pedal. The pedals are Wellgo SPD clones, platform on one side, clips on the other (similar to the Performance campus pedal).

The only thing that I've found that works is to spray the pedal with lubricant (like WD-40), but it makes a mess of the pedals and makes my shoes greasy.

Any other ideas? This is my second pair of shoes, and the first pair squeaked also.

Interestingly enough, I have that same problem with my right shoe, and it's more prevalent on one side of the right pedal than on the other. Spring tension might have something to do with the noise level, but I think the major culprit is that as I walk with the shoes, I wear off the rubber and eventually the cleat. (a bit). In my case, new shoes don't squeak because the rubber is squeezed on the platform.

My solution is similar to yours : I use chain lube on the pedal. I try to be wise and apply it in the morning, so that dripping happens on the road and wiping occurs on the concrete outside the office. Lubrication usually lasts 1-2 weeks unless I hit a major rainfall. Only problem: it usually rains not too long after I lubricate !

I have Shimano SPDs and they squeak as well. Shoes are Specialized and I don't know which model. I've been using chainwax about once a week or two and that keeps em quiet. The pedals are looking pretty grungy though.

I was going to suggest that you grease the bearings in the pedals. Now that I hear that the squeek comes from the friction between your shoes and the pedals, I am going to recommend you grease the soles of your shoes.

TRUMPHENT

I put a coat of heavy automotive grease on the contact points of my pedals. Minimal application and infrequent.

I reapply the grease when I start to feel gritty resistance during unclipping.

I have been using the Nashbar ATB pedals, never had to adjust tension. They are good for me out of the box.
