Successful First Commute - Me and the Kids
Today was my first day commuting by bike. I had my daughter (3) on the trail-a-bike and my son (7) on his bike. We rode 3.5 miles to the sitters then I continued on another mile to my office. My son is in daycamp at my office (i work in a musuem) so I went and picked him up at noon then we returned to the sitters after work to pick up little sis.
The distance was short but it was a long haul. My son is still on a 16" bike so he doesn't move too fast. We got him a 20" tonight. A good friend/co-worker heard me talking about him needing a bigger bike and mentioned that she had a garage full of bikes her kids had outgrown....and her son's bike had a flat that she didnt know how to fix. So we traded a tube change for a bike.
Overall it was a great experience. The kids had a good time and they were pooped when we got home! My son is very active but my daughter would sit in front of the TV all day if we'd let her. This is a great way to get her active!
It won't be an every day thing but I'm hoping to do it at least 2-3 days a week.

Sounds like a fun commute! What a great example to set for your kids.

They are. Any LBS or REI can order them. I left the knobbies on my kids' bikes because they like to get on the dirt a little bit too. I figure the extra rolling resistance can't be that big a deal given the short distances that kids tend to ride.

I hope you continue to love it as much as I do. It's really my favorite part of the day. I get to watch and follow my 6yo kid ride his bike 2 miles down an MUP to school, get to talk to him while we do it, and as a bonus watch him grow in many ways. I then ride on to work and my wife picks him up at the end of the day and throws his bike on the roof. I can't wait till his younger brother joins us this fall.
