Biking is for lazy people..

I finally realized the reason to why I bike.

I am one of the laziest persons in the world.

I thought I did it to get fit and to save money on gas. But oh boy, that's definitely not the reason. Today I parked my bike and decided to walk around campus, and it felt so much different. The real reason I bike is so that I don't have to walk between buildings between classes, that I don't have to walk to and wait for the subway, and that I don't have to look for a parking space and then walking from parking space.

Anyone else bike for this reason?

Yeah, my commute is short and it's easier to ride my bike than to walk, esp with my knees.

You really have to put some effort into riding to make it an exercise.

Yeah, I go to college, and although I live close to my small campus, I still bike nearly everywhere on campus and in between classes. It's much quicker and easier than walking, so I occasionally walk to mix things up or just for fun.

I disagree.. it's a whole heckuva lot harder on my body to ride my bike 13 miles to work than to drive my car or ride the bus there. For me it IS exercise, and that's one of the reasons I like it. The other is to keep my sanity by avoiding sitting in stopped or slow moving rush hour traffic in my car. Even walking around my neighborhood. Walking up a hill is a lot easier (if slower) than pedaling up hill.

I sometimes ride because I hate walking (it takes to long!) and I hate waiting for public transport. I actually find walking more difficult and more hard work than riding.

Heh. I think it's both for me. I was definitely encouraged to start biking so I could make my 20 minute walk to campus a little shorter and easier, but I also wanted to take up cycling as a hobby to get some exercise (and get in shape!).

Apparently I have a dual-personality that can't decide whether I want to be lazy or not...

My commute is 1.25 miles to work. It's 90% downhill on the way to work, and uphill going home. In my case, walking home is WAY easier than riding. On the other hand, riding TO work is far easier (and faster) than walking (nearly all coasting).

The amount of exercise involved between walking and riding is all about the terrain.

I park my bike in the lobby at work. Everybody else has to leave their motorcycles and cars in the parking lot.

Well I was born lazy and raised slow...to me a bicycle is to get from point A to point B with minimum amount of effort. If it is more than about 200' I am going to grab a bicycle.

No. I carry my bike up and down two stories at my apartment because I enjoy cycling that much. My 4 mile commute is disappointingly short.

I practically have a nervous breakdown if my bike is locked up outside.

I have a pretty much unwritten rule for myself.

If my commute is within a mile, I'll just walk. The effort of taking the bike and locking it, etc is just not worth the hassle.

Anything between a mile and 15 miles I'll bike. This is usually a majority of my commutes.

Anything 15 miles +, I'll take my motorcycle. If it's raining or I have to travel on the freeway, then I'll take my car.

When I move to Los Angeles where the weather is more consistent, the motorcycle (that cannot go above 55mph) and the car are going for sale. Then I'll replace the both with a Suzuki Burgman or a Yamaha Majesty scooter....it would be much more cost effective. They're well capable of freeway travel, get the same gas mileage as my motorcycle AND carry 16 gallons worth of gear!

Yes. I'm also too lazy to exercise for exercise's sake, so I combine it with getting somewhere.

Pretty crazy. I never figured waking up early, getting on my bike, riding 9 miles to work over pain in the ass hills and then ride home after a lazy thing to do. I'm so lazy that my heart is beating like crazy and I am drenched in sweat. *Goes to find bag of chips.*

Dunno how 'lazy' it is, but it sure is selfish -- I'm all about supporting me, F@$^ the Arabs and the oil companies! I can't claim 'em on my taxes, I ain't supportin' 'em!

well i hate jogging. biking is way more fun. I'm a 10 year old at heart I have to have fun.

Today my wife wanted to go to the park for a little while with our son. She wanted to pick me up and put my bike in the trunk and I'd bike home from the park (boring, not nearly far enough). We came to the compromise that she'd pick me up and drop me back off at work so I could ride all the way home. LOL. I'm a sad case. So no I'm not lazy.

And I don't coast down hills, I see how fast I can go. For me every ride is a time trial.

I see how it can seem lazy for short distances. Sure I could walk 6 miles to work, but it takes me an hour and 45 minutes each way and I will be tired and lose precious time, especially if I have to work in the morning when I worked a night shift the previous day.

+1

I don't even really ride unless I have somewhere to go. It makes me feel like I've accomplished something.

Me too. It's kind of hard to give up on a workout when you're halfway between places - much too easy at the gym. Plus there's no mirrors to tell me how stupid I look on the bike!

I just got a rear rack so i don't have to carry beer/soda from the store 4 blocks from the house. I also seem to grab the bike for anything over 2 blocks b/c its more fun than walking. Walking is sooo very boring.
