Insurance Company that lets you pick all cars as liesure?

So is there an Insurance Company out there that allows all your cars to be leisure? I commute so much now, that I put 2/3rds more miles on my bicycle than my car...

I'm listed as a leisure driver on my auto insurance.
Just tell them you only drive occasionally and that should take care of the problem.

tell whatever company you decide to go with that you are an "ultra low mileage" driver, that should reduce your premium quite a bit.

Yup, my insurance co. allowed me to list both of my vehicles (one a farm truck, the other a convertible--now gone) as leisure vehicles.

That still might be too often for an insurance company.

This sounds interesting. How do the insurance companies keep you from abusing the policy though?

I've been all leisure in two states with Liberty Mutual. Worked from home in Ohio; and now walking, and soon bike riding to work in Minnesota.

+1 for Liberty Mutual. I've been with them since I started driving (19 years ago) and I've got my only car registered as a leisure vehicle. Under 2000 miles/year is the requirement according to my agent.

Probably by giving you a seriously hard time with coverage if you have an accident while driving the car to or from work, or with a zillion miles on it since last application update.

That depends. My car is already only liability insurance, and we have 3 cars and our homeowner's insurance and every discount in existance. Moving from 14k per year to 3k leisure status only saved me about $75 a year, and we do shop around.

In my small town the agent wrote my milage down. When I went in to renew the policy, she checked it.

My town is small enough I still pay all but my cel phone bills in person.

I would imagine it is an easy calculation. It only matters if/when you need to collect on the policy.

So they take your mileage when you sign up. Then X months later you have an accident. Not hard to calculate what your mileage better be under or else you get nailed.

State Farm. I have a company vehicle for commuting. And all my personal cars are insured for low mileage. They, State Farm, send me a odometer affidavid every year or so. I also suspend the coverage on them from time to time. Wish I could bike commute, but the job doesn't allow it and unfortunately would be impractical. This is the only job where I have commuted by car.

Progressive has a new program in the USA coming out that has been tested in a couple of markets. It's called Pay As You Drive.

They hook up a sensor to your OBD-II port. They collect data such as miles driven, how hard you hit your brakes, and average speed.

For a casual driver this could save you a significant amount.

Very cool. Wish they would have had something like this when I started driving. I could have saved THOUSANDS as a young guy with good driving habits. It would probably shed some light on the "women drivers being good drivers" horse$hit that's annoyed me for almost 10 years.

Anyway...I told geico I was going to stop driving..."so you're going to be driving around 1000 miles per year?" "Yea...sure..." Ended up dropping my premium ~30 bucks a month!

No kidding. I haven't noticed any difference, almost all drivers are bad. The only driver at work that I won't ride with anymore for fear of my life is a woman.

I have AIG and have both cars picked as leisure or lowest mileage possible or something like that. AIG has five letter codes that reflect characteristics about the insured, for example, age and sex of main drivers, number of traffic violations and accidents in certain time periods, etc. One of the characteristics is number of miles driven per year or something to that extent and based on our low mileage (27K over 4 years for one car and 56K over 9 years for the other) we fall in the best category/rate for this characteristic.

Werd. The only times I can ever remember being legitimately horrified in a car were all with girls at the wheel yet they pay far less in ins than I do? That never made any sense to me. Maybe this will change that some.

I'm sure it wont be long until they'll forward that data to the police and have them mail you a ticket everytime you go 10 over the limit.

I heard about some tests being done in Canada involving the use of GPS in this fasion a while back. GPS was used to tell a computer on the car what the speed limit is for the road you're on and it wouldn't let you go any faster. That was years ago and I've never heard anything since, though.

I'd be surprised if anything ever got that far. Amongst many other problems it'd cause, it'd be a hacker's/tinkerer's DREAM to get that crap off their cars as soon as possible...lol
