The wife's new bike!
Hey all,
I got the wife a new (very old
) bike! Its a 70's Schwinn Breeze I picked up off of CL for $82! It has a 3sp Sturmy Archer Internally geared hub (need some serious adjustment) that works and even the original generator light mounted to the front wheel! The light doesn't work, but I just need to do some trouble shooting and figure it out. Its a way cool metal flake green color and even comes with some old school WALD baskets! Here's to hoping she will actually use it!

Very beautiful, great color, and what a deal! Hope your wife loves it. My LBS in Prescott, AZ, sells used bikes and usually has a Schwinn Breeze and other models - about 150 or so.

Oh wow...my mom had that same bike for about 25 years...she got it 'brand new' when she was a teenager. As a little kid it fascinated me because I had no clue how the gears worked (I couldn't SEE the gears changing)...those crazy internal hubs!

My Aunt had one just like it sans baskets and dynolight.

I've got one like that sitting next to my garage but its sure not in that nice of condition. It needs a heap of work to get it in shape. In fact I think the rims are so rusty I'll never get them cleaned up. Oh well it was free

That's in lovely nick! The SA hub almost certainly doesn't need "serious adjustment", but in fact just a little tweak. Probably all you need to know is this:
"If it freewheels forward in high gear, the cable is to tight or has too much friction to release properly. If it freewheels forward in middle gear, the cable is too loose."

I'm going to take it into a LBS who says they can do the work.... Its only $50 for a full tune and lube, and since this is HER bike, I don't want to run the risk of screwing it up! I'll mess up my bikes all day long, I don't want to put a foul taste in her mouth by messing up hers..... Ya know what I mean vern?
It is a SWEET ride and does ride very well. Its too small for me, and since I no longer have a job anymore (shhhh don't tell any one.... redhouse, we need to start a club!). So I will just be commuting back and forth to school when it starts back up next month. And that will be done on my TREK.... more gears, goes faster!

i see a lot of "schwinn collegiate" from the 70s on CL around here. Steel things (cars, bikes, whatever) in TX usually have very little rust and hold up great for decades.

That's a nice one. The seat is in rather fine shape. $82 is a fair price. That era chicago Schwinns are becoming a bit of a hobby for me. I love them. I'm always watching CL. They made millions of them so a lot of good ones are still out there, so they should be cheap.
Try some super fine 0000 steel wool on the chrome and it'll look like brand new. Amazing how that stuff comes back. It's about 1/8 of a inch thick.
You cant ride a bike like that an not have a smile on your face.
